Wow, I'm guess there's a lot of authorial self-insertion if not simply fanwankery. Yikes.

"Accent-neutral Chicago, Illinois?!?" WHAT?!? Is this like that claim Californians make, that they don't have accents, which everyone else knows it patently ridiculous?

This book is...not great so far. It's like a less successful, less well-written, less moving "I Am Not A Serial Killer". Too many characters, too little genuine feeling.
