Status Update

I really want this story to go a certain way! The captivating writing is beautiful and the insights are profound. But I'm worried that the story will reveal what is clearly true about humanity in a character I don't want to be so human. What makes a great story great can also be what makes it sad.

Despite the fact that this story was written about 163 years ago, there are so many relevant connections between how people interacted then and how we interact today that the insight it offers remains clear and powerful. If I use a character's name, a fellow reader will understand the human frailty or nobility I'm referring to. That's a powerful story!

I am amazed at the humor threaded throughout this book. I read it so long ago, that I didn't remember it being so witty. Maybe, as a kid, I didn't understand the humor or appreciate the literary skill it took to craft a work so funny and yet so poignant.

I read many of Dickens' books when I was much younger, and they always struck me as depressing. Now, I am reading his books again, and I'm finding great humor and insight. The words are the same, but my understanding has grown.
