I’m struggling with this one a bit. I’m going to revisit it in nonfiction November.

Some fascinating connections between Passover and the Eucharist on pages 142-146.

“…there’s a kind of wisdom to religion, that if you clear away the white noise of spirituality and listen, faith and works might actually be allies. We are, after all, creatures…It makes sense that a vestigial part of us should still be crouched over a votive candle somewhere or kneeling to receive the Host, chewing that which is not bread alone. Man cannot live on bread alone” (78).

“In fact, now that I think of it, I can remember no less than seven makeshift sacraments in my youth. Each one is a clue, or perhaps a cairn easily seen from a distance, enabling me to make sense of those difficult years” (24).
