I'm pretty sure unless I completely missed something: 1966, G.P. Putnam's Sons.

Yeah, I'm kinda excited about the Coover/Theroux* tangent my life has taken, but Vollmann is pressing me first complaining I've held him longest, so they might have to wait until late 2016 or 2017. Depends on my energy, etc.

*Largely thanks to Nathan "N.R." and his ilk and acolytes.

Bill Extremely nice books. Darconville's Cat is such a great book, I'm going to try and re-read it next year. I have Laura Warholic as well. I wish Theroux would write another really long novel

I can only afford a couple Therouxs, Vollmanns, etc. in my life.

Sounds about right. I'm fairly certain too that it only went through one printing.

Some interesting publication anecdotes at wikipedia ::

Best paragraph:

"When the novel won the Washington Post award for best first novel, Coover, upon contacting Putnam, was told "Yes, we've heard, but let's understand one thing right now, we are not spending another goddamned nickel on this book, is that clear?" Copies were made available, but the book would not earn back its $2000 advance."
