When it comes to religion, I tend to think it humbles us-teaches us our place in the world.
Really? I think it lets us off the hook, teaches us that nothing is really our fault, that something is pulling the strings, that ultimately we’re not to blame for the way things are. But the truth is we are very much responsible for the badness in the world. And we have the power to fix it.

Why does it seem that the more supernatural, unprovable, improbable, and ancient the source, the more people believe these texts (the Bible)?
Humans need reassurance. They need to know others survived the hard times. And unlike other species, which do a better job of learning from their mistakes, humans require constant threats and reminders to be nice.

Until he found rowing he’d never really had a connection with other. Physical suffering, he’d long ago learned, bonds people in a way that everyday life can’t.

People will always yearn for a simple solution to their complicated problems. It’s a lot easier to have faith in something you can’t see, can’t touch, can’t explain, and can’t change, rather than have faith in something you actually can - oneself.
