Essay 13: Spending Black Culture: Marketing the black underclass - “Without a sustained critique of class power and class divisions among black folks, what is represented in the mass media, in cultural production, will merely reflect the biases and standpoint of a privileged few” (178)

Essay 12: Ice Cube Culture: A shared passion for speaking truth bell hooks and Ice Cube in dialogue - so cool to imagine this conversation happening in real time, hooks’s ability to remain eloquent in speech in addition to her writing is something I am jealous of

Essay 11: Gangsta Culture—Sexism and Misogyny: Who will take the rap? - This might be my favorite essay in the book so far, hooks is so apt and succinct when breaking down ideas I feel like I myself would stumble over and ramble on about. “Young black males are forced to take the heat for encouraging via their music the hatred of and violence against women that is a central core of patriarchy” (136)

Essay 10: Seduced by Violence No More - “By refusing to function in the heterosexist framework that condones male erotic domination of women, females would be actively disempowering patriarchy” (133)

Essay 9: Katie Roiphe: A little feminist excess goes a long way - “a vision of feminist movement that simplistically mirrors, patriarchal stereotypes” (126) is not a true feminist movement, and undermines the works that push to deconstruct such stereotypes in the movement.

Essay 8: Dissident Heat: Fire with fire - “ history documents that it has been a political movement, emerging from the concrete struggles of women and men to oppose sexism and sexist oppression. We do a disservice to that history to deny its political and radical intent.” (116)
