NASA and Mark are still in communication with each other providing help and advice for Mark's surivia, until they come and retrieve him. Some problems that he has encountered are the water reclaimer, the oxygen level, and the depressurization process. Meanwhile the Pathfinder has completely died and many things are going south for Mark. The book can relate to my life because at one point everything did go south on me

NASA has just recived full contact ability for Mark Watney. They are able to type information back and forth from Mars to earth and vis versa. NASA is well aware of marks whereabouts and food supply and is planning a mission to save him. Mars is a very dry plannet which has a very thin atmosphere making it difficult or impossible to survive. This effects the plot and more importantly Mark Watney due to the fact that

Mark Watney is one of four members on a mission to Mars. During a storm on Mars, Watney is hit by flying dabree and is injured. The rest of the crew leaves without him thinking he is dead. He has enough food, water, and shelter for a year. NASA has another mission to come in four year, therefore Watney has to survived and make food for the next for years. Watney has a very positive attitude & thinks he can make it.
