Introduction of a little over 3 pages: discusses a work Mann called his "pyramid" taking him a good solid 10 years out of a 20 year span. He what this to be "The Great Literary Monument" that would be the peak of all his work. His magnum opus.
Well guess what?
Those that want to read about this topic, probably will reach for the Bible. The size of this book really has me wondering if I will make it through.

A difficult read but also quite interesting. Unfortunately it is a very slow progressing story.. Maybe it is Mann wanting to make his research matter and how to use it differently than one would expect.
Not really learning much different than what know.

Mann does not leave much uncovered. Detailed more in story than we are used to. Still a struggle read so far. Hoping things get better. Still the story of Jacob so far.

Mann's words leave no doubt of the young man and his appearance and his passion in prayer(?) for his surroundings. Mann's words make you feel like you ARE reading a masterpiece.

Cyclamens, their purples and pinks bleached by the moon, The skies glorious. The air here bore the scent of flowers and aromatic herbs, of moist vapors from the trees, of wood smoke and dung. Mann makes you take in every word and imagine the view he is describing.

Mann's prose is amazingly beautful. Yes the sentences are long but I am reading them with the commas intended of bits of each sentence. I skipped the Prelude and started AT THE WELL with Ishtar.

Mann did not want this to read as words from the Bible. He wanted it to be a richness in voices somewhat like a sonata from Mozart.
