Wrexford a serious chemist and his valet is more lab assistant than valet. The murderer is the admin head of the Royal Society and he had developed a stable form of mercury fulminate while pretending to only be interested in butterflies. He died when he fell fleeing Wrexford and his compound exploded from the impact and torched the entire warehouse.

Charlotte found out her husband was making art forgeries for members of the ancients to make some money selling the fakes because they cannot sell the original entailed artwork. The murderer had vaporized mercury where he had been working to poison him and make him go mad.
