The problem with reading hard sf is that I get very judgy when fake/wrong science gets passed off as real. Been doing a lot of googling and was so far pleased by most of the cosmic facts turning up true, until this mentioning of Monte Carlo ruined it. I've never heard anyone describe Monte Carlo like that and I'm pretty sure it's wrong. You don't COVER a shape with dots to find its area! That's called pixel art :/

The random insertions of historical figures are fun and, surprisingly, quite grounded. I like how their models of the universe match the namesake person's worldview.

This is like, the only book that ever got on my radar because of real life friends who I don't talk books with :) Some coworker asked me years ago if I'd read this amazing Chinese sci-fi book that I had never heard of... and it's intrigued me ever since.By the way, Hirondelle if you're in the mood for another buddy read, I feel like this could be an interesting one because I'm very curious how certain things are translated lol. No pressure though, I know it's past last minute notice. Maybe the second book in the series, if we both feel like reading it eventually!

Thanks for the invite, and despite not being in my plans at all (plans, what plans?), I think I am going to give it a try. It would be really interesting to ask questions about translation to somebody reading it in the original. I was planning to read the new Galbraith mystery but I have gone on a total Tana French binge on audio (no regrets! ) and I think this might be a better idea all around.
No promises, I might wimp out at any moment or get distracted, but I know I will be curious seeing your updates, so yeah, hold my beer, I will give it a try also!

Some, but mostly by changes in the text. The translator writes in a postscript
The Three-Body Problem begins with the Cultural Revolution, and there are numerous allusions to Chinese history. I’ve tried to keep the number of explanatory footnotes to a bare minimum by, wherever possible, filling in the necessary knowledge for non-Chinese readers by the judicious addition of a few informational phrases in the text (all approved by the author).
