A similar plot set up to "The Watchmaker's Daughter". Sylvia is now an orphan and barely getting by. She seeks out Gabe to contact India about the silver magician note from her brother's journal. He is a renowned war hero and supposedly artless. There are times when he can seem to move incredibly fast. He up ends her job at the library, he gets her a job at the Glass Library.

Sylvia knows nothing about her father and her mother hid her background from her 2 children. She will live with Daisy for now. The exhibit director and the artist friend worked together to steal the painting. They pointed the finger to a worker that was also killed.

Odd listening to the voices that used to be India and Matt are now Sylvia and Gabe. Halfway through we discover Gabe is engaged to Ivy a leather magician. Gabe starts to move Sylvia into his house when she is in danger from someone in the investigation and Ivy is OK with this. She can't go back to her boarding house and other respectable houses won't take her without a current recommendation.
