With Beth as her companion, they are eager to see more of India. They have visited a Bazaar and are riding horseback to a posting house in search of their prey. Strangely, most people do not claim to have seen them. The only clue was a woman yelling at Daphne

They foiled the shaper who tried to assassinate the governor-general. Then Finn proposes marriage. Daphne gets re-assigned to Spain and then tries to get them changed to stay with Finn.

Prince captured Sir Rodney and planned to behead him publicly. They planned a rescue. Plan C finally worked. One of the team members is dead. Daphne bounds both Fletcher and Prince to Calcutta in extreme act after he catches them in the crowd.

She eventually got to Fletcher to bound him away, but he was held by a mover. She forced him free and tore most of her internal organs. After significant healing, she recovered with her parents. During that time, the residence was attacked. They held out for several days, but had to be evacuated before the additional soldiers arrived. She helped with evacuation.

Lt Wright is dead and was replaced by a shaper. He fled. Daphne tried to bound to Fletcher is held captive but bound inside him instead. They are both in great pain and she cannot bound away now. He was taken prisoner in the old palace. She unlocked an outside door, then was captured while returning to rest more before leaving.

Lt. Wright is looking suspicious. He's acting odd after bazaar attack, where hit on head? He supposedly put out a fire before Daphne did. He tied up prisoner who got loose and he shot him before he could take them to where he met Prince

They attend a storytelling, and the man was killed. There is a young prince who should have inherited the region but was born 5 mo. after his father died. His mother died in childbirth. Grandfather raised as his son. He is trying to regain his birthright by force. Daphne thwarts locals trying to burn down English residence. He doesn't care about the people.

There is no sign of the missionaries as they scour the countryside. Fletcher determines there are NO missionaries and this is some kind of a ruse. They return to the town and visit the bazaar again to get more information. A riot breaks out and Daphne must battle her weakness to try to save those of her team who are in life-threatening danger. She realizes she is falling for Fletcher.

Daphne starts having allowed a man to die because she fainted at the sight of blood. She was reassigned to India to ferry the family of a high minister back and forth between England and Calcutta. She is expected to attend social functions and meets Phineas, a Discerner-one who can read another's emotions with a touch.
