Book One, done! The section on Pausanias and Themistocles was probably my favourite. I didn't realise how systematic and methodical Thucydides' approach was and it's so refreshing after reading Herodotus.

The Melian Dialogue was absolutely fascinating but also horrifying: political realism is a dangerous concept.

There are so many treaties and they're all essentially the same - it's ridiculous.

"One does not feel sad at not having some thing which is outside one's experience: real grief is felt at the loss of something which one is used to." - Pericles in his Funeral Oration (which was captivating). Also, finished Book 2!

My initial impression is that The History of the Peloponnesian War is much more structurally realised than Herodotus' Histories. This is of course aided by the employment of sub-headings by modern historians, but, regardless, it's much easier to follow and understand than The Histories - even though the content is still complicated.
