A sad, sweet gem. Love how this story is told through the properties of different shrubs and herbs. While it carries grief, it brings back to life the old ways of the wild and wise women who were persecuted for their knowledge.

Beautifully observed, it depicts the overwhelm of mothering while healing from grief of losing a sibling, of handling the practicalities of a small child with type 1 diabetes and the joy/reward of love being mirrored back to a mother through her child. And the project of building an apothecary garden, with notes on all the properties of those magical plants in the wastelands.
The joy of children when they're allowed.

The author and her son create a garden of free plants they forage for with health and healing properties, part of his homeschooling and her dealing with grief. Each new chapter we meet one of these plants, its ancient mystical and present properties, each plant leading into the next part of their story, withdrawing from and reaching for community.
