Beautifully observed, it depicts the overwhelm of mothering while healing from grief of losing a sibling, of handling the practicalities of a small child with type 1 diabetes and the joy/reward of love being mirrored back to a mother through her child. The author and her son create a garden of free plants they forage for with health and healing properties, part of his homeschooling and her dealing with grief. Each new chapter we meet one of these plants, its ancient mystical and present properties, each plant leading into the next part of their story, withdrawing from and reaching for community.
