August returns home from another country where nature is completely different, for the funeral of Pop.
Words missing from the dictionary are added.
Some words have a different meaning, like yield, bend - baayanha - in their language it's the things you give to, the movement, the space between things. Sorrow, old age and pain bend and yield. In English it's the reaping, the things man can take from the land, claims.

As Mischka fades, losing more words, her past reappears, a mystery arises. Mystery or degradation of mind?
The interruptions to Jerome's speech therapy exercises, as she tries to pry information out of him about his father he doesn't talk to.
Intriguing. Sad, a sense of running out of time, at the same time as a relief not to have to endure this state for too long, the catch 22 of old age and a deteriorating mind.

Michka is losing her words, other words sneak in to take the place of the one she is searching for.
She is also searching for the couple who cared for her as a child, but she doesn't know their surname.
She never had children, never wanted to.
But a little girl Marie, found her, descending to ring her doorbell, entering her life, awakening her nurturing aspect.
Now Marie visits her. Listens, Says yes.
Intriguing.

A structure to have imposed across a set of memories, recalling 17 brushes with death and the organ they're associated with, some are dramatic, others realised after the risk has passed, one her mother shares, some that don't get a chapter, mentioned in passing.
Each 'brush' is a complete story, vignette, making it a collection with that common thread running through, passing back and forth in time.

The scene setting in the opening lines of the 2 sections I've read are so compelling, this no "told" narrative, it's a show and make the reader feel how it was narrative. Both inside the mind and body of a young girl and and of the natural surrounds, oblivious and ominous.

Excellent storytelling, despite Maurice's cantankerous disposition and reluctant sentimentality.
Who could imagine that a single coin could be the cause of so much devastation.
And that ease with which young women were institutionalised.
The many undiagnosed differences in humans, which sets them aside, creates experiences which affect how they conduct themselves as adults.

The twists & turns of lives, based on singular events, pressure mounts, something happens, causes a change; when Ray was at school, undiagnosed in his dsylexia, living with the consequences of teachers and pupils, pushed by parents to keep returning. Then in one day everything changes.
At work, the boss takes his frustration out on his son, son takes it out on Ray, he tries to avoid it, then one day it all changes.

A bit annoying that 'fi' is deleted throughout and also the first part of every new chapter or section, makes reading it less satisfying due to the constant annoyance.

Ultimately Allende is 78 yrs old and is writing about how not to succumb to the tendencies of ageing, the limiting beliefs of society and oneself, and observes how times have changed for her, compared to her mother and grandmother. & the patriarchy.

Maurice Hannigan is up to something. He's 84 and is having a drink in a bar, having sold everything, booked into a hotel for a night, and now he's toasting 5 people before whatever it is he has planned.

I don't warm to him in the first 5 pages and this is the 2nd time I've started this book, but now that he's toasting his brother Anthony, I'm willing to spend this snowy afternoon listening to him recount his life.

Isabel Allende looks at how her mother's early marriage and the husband's abandonment influenced and shaped her. She looks back at the effect of the patriarchy on their lives, her early rebellious years in journalism, the compromises each generation makes.

Hemi was given knowledge and guidance to care for the land, to grow things to support the whanau. After his grandfather passed he went outside to work. With the works closed down he is returning to the land.

"He was sorry about the general hardship that people were facing, but for himself, for the whanau, he was glad. He had important things to do, things that had been on his mind for years now."

I get the feeling this requires close reading.
The children are referred to with associations to earth, sea, fear and stories. The talk of stories reminds me of Leslie Marmon Silko. I may follow this up with her book Storytelling.

Oh, the shock of page 196! You did what? How could you! Oh, you poor child. No wonder. That's better. Thank you. Keep going then.

It's interesting to be reading this having already read her work of nonfiction, Handiwork. The use if language is so familiar it's taking me a while to be convinced it's a 57 year old male narrator and not the author herself, the protagonist shares her powers of observation and fondness of words.
Looking at cover and those words, they seem to represent the seasons and almost have the same two letters as the seasons

There is something delightful, surreal and innocent about this book, though she is the caretaker of a cemetery, Violette Toussaint is a breath of fresh air. She has 2 wardrobes, one she calls summer, the other winter. Summer she wears underneath and they are light and bright colours, winter the opposite. They are the external, what others see, and she is the same, made of those two shades, light underneath and within
