After Amalfitano's rambling diatribe against "Mexican intellectuals", I think I am getting a hang of what the novel is about and what it's trying to do. I think 2666 is an impressionist reading of or a reaction to 20th century violence. It's like a poem. I have understood that the novel is a mystery. And that it will certainly not give easy answers.

"Life is demand and supply, or supply and demand, that's what it boils down to, but that's no way to live. A third leg is needed to keep the table from collapsing into the garbage pit of history, which in turn is permanently collapsing into the garbage pit of the void. So take note. This is the equation: supply + demand + magic. And what is magic? Magic is epic and it's also sex and Dionysian mists and play."

End of part one: I can't stop smiling.

Because of the part about first-world academics getting a whiff of Evil, if not encountering it outright, and feeling disorientated, I am reminded of Hari Kunzru's Red Pill.
