Some complications that Mare is faced with include becoming a prisoner in Tuck, her best friend betraying her, and getting thrown into an arena to fight for her life with no lightning powers.

This book fits into the overcoming the monster archetype. Mare is trying to overcome Maven's cruelty and power by attempting to kill Maven and put the rightful king on the throne. Maven came into power when his mother forced Cal to kill his father on live television getting rid of both the rulers before him. As a result, Mare and Cal both become fugitives while trying to take back the crown.

There are two known types of blood, red and silver. Newbloods were recently discovered so the king wants to keep them a secret. There is also a war going on between the Lakelanders and Norta. Maven already betrayed Mare and as a result she doesn't trust anyone, not even her own brother. Maven is sending 10 legions in even thought there is only supposed to be 9.
