I like Kierkegaard but the long chapter on him feels like a digression. Just about every survey on existentialism seems obligated to include him and, I'll just say my controversial opinion: I don't get it.
Sure, he centered the observer as subject, which is central to existentialism. However, the French writers of the 1940s landed at a similar point only incidentally.
