In Out of My Mind, protagonist Melody Brooks' character archetype is the outcast. With her severely debilitating condition of Cerebral Palsy, Melody is unable to talk, walk or advocate for herself. Her limitations left her unable to partake in various activities with her peer group, which left her without friends to accept her and be kind to her for who she is.

In the book Out of My Mind, protagonist Melody Brooks's overall motivation is to prove her intelligence to the outside world. Though Melody was born with a severe case of Cerebral Palsy; a medical condition that limits bodily motion, she was still very smart. Melody wanted to be a normal girl like the other kids, through proving she is no different mentally.

The book "Out of My Mind" by Sharon M Draper is written in a sympathetic and kind tone. When the story begins, protagonist Melody is faced with her disability of cerebral palsy, which greatly limits her physical abilities. Her family, but primarily her mother uses kindness to help her achieve a live with happiness and love. The author is sympathetic towards her life, but the kindness around her supports tremendously.
