The main character of The Path of Daggers, Rand al'Thor, is motivated throughout the book by duty. According to the Prophecy of the Dragon Reborn, Rand must fight the source of ultimate evil in the Last Battle. Rand has completely accepted this burden, and every decision he makes, with some affecting the safety of his friends and family, is orientated around him fulfilling the prophecy and saving the world.

The tone of The Path of Daggers is mostly sinister. For example, there is a scene in the book in which Moridin, a character shrouded in mystery, is stalking Avienda, a protagonist. This scene clearly held a sinister tone, as Avienda described Moridin in a way that emphasized how dangerous he was. She kept mentioning that there was something wrong about him and kept lamenting that he unnerved her.
