No one would deny that the opening lines of psalm 23 are are beautiful but, for me, they don’t bear a deeper reading. After all, sheep are not the most intelligent of animals, and though I don’t mind being compared to a wooly quadruped for a few lines, I don’t wish to be herded around in a flock - even to green pastures and still waters. Nor do I feel comforted by rods and staffs - however divinely wielded.

But it is also a weakness because ultimately it’s untrue, and when you believe you’re in control, you can easily fall into the delusion of doing and let your inner life become a business enterprise: if I do such and such, then God has to do such and such in return.
