No one would deny that the opening lines of psalm 23 are are beautiful but, for me, they don’t bear a deeper reading. After all, sheep are not the most intelligent of animals, and though I don’t mind being compared to a wooly quadruped for a few lines, I don’t wish to be herded around in a flock - even to green pastures and still waters. Nor do I feel comforted by rods and staffs - however divinely wielded.

“Trust her” - these two simple words would seem terrifying to Joseph because they would eliminate his sense of control. The sense of control is one of the strengths of religious systems and it is a powerful motivation to righteousness, which is another name for decency and kindness.
