I chose to read this book because I had recently seen the movie 47 ronin and the movie had peaked my interest in the way of traditional samurai. This story starts with Taro being hidden away while his fathers estate is being attacked. When the enemy finds him he picks up a bamboo sword and takes a fighting stance even though he is only a young boy. This act surprises the enemy so much that the general spares taro.

At this point in the book Taro has become a soldier and is riding at the right hand of his lords second in command. He is given the important task of rationing out the food to the soldiers. Although he is young he has proven his worth and caught the attention of his lord and of his captain. When he found a soldier trying to steal food, Taru beats him to the ground and makes his carry heavy weights for the trip.
