I love me a good gif every now and again. *fist bump* But...it needs to be said (again)...21 gifs in a review? Unacceptable. 15? Still not ok. 8? Nope. I'm not the gif patrol, but really...moderation, people. FYI...people are blocking you...and that's a bummer...because I'm sure they actually do want to know what you thought of that book!

Karen Wellsbury Well said mrs, its enough to make you run away and join another site sometimes

Sun Someone needs to start GoodGIFs...where people can review via gif! And then there will be a home for our over-gif'ers to show their creativity!

But, my sorry ass wifi can't take the loading of all this...and my phone data plan is not happy either...

message 4: by Connie (new)

Connie There is no need for it, at all. Thank you for speaking up! :)

Caroline The HEA Lover Not to mention that a lot of times those gifs are SPOILING the story and it's hard NOT to see them. Makes me very very veeeeeeeery angry. I think Goodreads could do without pictures/gifs in reviews.

message 6: by Teri (new)

Teri I LOVE the GIFy reviews! They make me laugh. I, myself am not very articulate and sometimes a GIF is perfect for relaying your thoughts and feelings.
Different strokes, I guess.

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) I also can't handle super giffy reviews. If I have to scroll for pages to see you actually write something, something is wrong.

I totally am ok with a few. A lot crack me up or make me gawww. But there are some out there that are complete overkill. As I said...moderation. I think there is such a thing as TOO much.

message 9: by Jo (new)

Jo I love gif reviews so when I say wow why so many - take me at my word but just my over inflated two cents

message 10: by Sun (new)

Sun Just to clarify: this is not a "DOWN WITH THE GIF!" rant. ha! :) I'm just saying that I'm hearing more and more people say they are having to block over-gif'ers because it clogs their feeds (not to mention how it reposts every time someone 'likes' it)...which in essence, has the reverse effect than originally intended. :-/

Natasha YOU GO GIRL! :D
I'm actually too scared to look on my feed at work now because of the sheer amount of dry-humping gifs. >____>

message 13: by Monique (new)

Monique Well said Susan... totally agree! One of the reasons I am very rarely on here now! Used to be GR was a fun place... back in the day! When we chatted about the books we loved, or didn't as the case may be in a friendly way. Now, it just seems to be a popularity contest where reviews are no longer about content but how sensational you can make them!?! Not playing that game!

message 14: by Silkeeeeeereads (last edited Apr 09, 2014 11:43AM) (new)

Silkeeeeeereads I GOT YOUR BACK. You know I'm going to back you on that statement since I'm one of those that seems to dislike a sh*tload, and say it. Brave and true remark, Susan. I was shocked to find out about reviewers that are actually getting PAID by publishers for, "Honest," reviews. I no longer trust anyone's reviews that show how well a reviewer can write a blurb and sing praises for a book that sucked. It's aggravating. If you need me to back you for anything, just holler. I'll be there.

This and this and THIS! I so agree. It seems to be all about how many gif's can fit and who can get the most likes to up their user status etc.

message 16: by Lady*M (new)

Lady*M I hate gifs in the reviews. One I can stand, I think I even used one once. But, this is a reading site. We don't need visual aids.

I just wish there was a button I could click and make them go away.

message 17: by Karen (new)

Karen Very well put, I enjoy gifs truly I do. But, by the time I get to the 5th...6th one my brain has moved on to the next post. I know I don't use any gifs in my reviews but that's just me, it doesn't mean I don't enjoy when someone else does, but yes the key is moderation.

message 18: by Sara (new)

Sara I use gif's in my status updates from time to time. I like using them that way to convey an emotion. They can be and are fun.

I agree about everything in moderation and what Lady*M said about us not needing visual aids.
I would rather read a review that said "I bought the book. I liked the book. You should read the book" than open up GR and see a flood of gif's. The 'best' ones are the overtly sexual ones that pop up when I am at home or at work. GR is becoming Not Safe for Anywhere anymore...

Allison ❤️Will Never Conquer Her TBR❤️ Bahaha. I think they're ok in books that are hard to review without spoilers but I try to only do gifs for those types or DNFs. Nothing beats a gif riddled DNF review because they're usually comical versus hurtful. Nothing bothers me more than a hurtful DNF review.

Sun Breann wrote: "*fist bump* This is the best status update in the history of ever. And LOOK! There's not one gif in it! Huh."

I was so tempted to put 21 gifts in the comments. Because I'm annoying like that! ha!

Mandy*reads obsessively* I agree Susan, it's not that I have problems with pics and gifs, but when they are liked over and over, I have pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages ..( well you get the point) of the same review full of gifs on my home feed and end up avoiding my feed and miss out on a lot of other things.
Since it takes forever to load them all.
I wish GR would ( similar to BL) just cut off the review at a certain point in the feed and I can click on to see it in it's full glory. :)
That way, those who enjoy can click on as often as they like and I can just click on once and not have my feed blocked up forever.
Plus I always feel I'm doing the same things to my friends feed when I like the reviews...sigh.

~✡~Dαni(ela) ♥ ♂♂ love & semicolons~✡~ I like gifs. They don't bug me. Some of my reviews have them; some don't. I don't think I've ever used more than four in a review; usually one or two is the standard. And in many reviews I don't use them at all.

I do know what you mean when people like them over and over and they're in your feed forever. I do love the pretty boys in them though.

I have to say I honestly pay no attention to this. I want to talk books (and more) with my friends on here. I love reading and writing and reviewing. I like it when people enjoy reading my reviews or if my review can help a person decide on what to read (or not read) next. I don't care how many likes I get. I refuse to make it a competition, because then it sucks all the enjoyment out of it.

message 26: by Steph (new)

Steph Omg, I thought it was just me!!

It was okay when people started to use them, but now? God, it annoys me.
I can't even really look at my feed on my phone because it's so clogged with gifs that it shuts down.

What happened to writing reviews? I want to hear what you thought. Not the same regurgitated gifs all the time. Some of my friends on here used to write the most amazing reviews and now, over time, they barely wrote anything at all. Just 15 gifs... which tell me nothing.
I have deleted and blocked many people, just to get rid of it.

~✡~Dαni(ela) ♥ ♂♂ love & semicolons~✡~ The images never appear on my app. I don't know why.

message 28: by Anke (new)

Anke Thanks for saying that, Susan! I'm totally with you, in fact I'm even more like Lady*M - I hate that stuff. I don't read those reviews. I even stopped looking at the best-review-page for Germany, because that's full with pics/gifs and next to nothing really resembling a review.
What I on top of that don't get - members of the m/m group are asked for several threads to not post covers, but only the link with the title/author, because of mobile devices. But it's ok on GR to have them exploding all around.

Justin I'm sorry if my dolphin porn gifs offended you, Ms. Susan. PLEASE DON'T UNFRIEND ME! :)

~✡~Dαni(ela) ♥ ♂♂ love & semicolons~✡~ I just did some quick stats on my reviews.

Out of my 60 most recent reviews, 15 contained GIFs, and none had more than two GIFs.

1 dolphin porn gif, 3 unicorn menage gifs...here a gif, there a gif, everywhere a gif gif...

Just not 21 gifs...please. Apparently that's the new alltime high! Unless, of course, it's James van der Beek (<- right, Sara?!)

message 40: by Jenn (new)

Jenn I find this really amusing that this status update has gotten so many likes because apparently so. many. of. us. hate all of it.

A well-placed gif is good. I think of Len's during ICoS or Taylor's while reading it and I crack up. But then there are people who bemoan the angst in a book or talk about how smexxxy it is and put up a picture of french fries or whatever. I do not compute your bad gif use.

:)

message 41: by Steph (new)

Steph I agree, Jenn. There are some that are just perfect in the right situation. I love those. But too many just gets on my nerves!!

Have to say...
Disney Princess .gifs in reviews for erotic fiction.
...just creepy.

message 43: by Ingie (last edited Apr 09, 2014 02:52PM) (new)

Ingie I must admit that I love to look for some great pics for my reviews. I think it's fun to try to make them nice with 1-3 well-chosen pics. Those of you who know me know that I rather choose drew pics and the like. - I also like to add a fun matching gif for a status update.

But I agree with you to a large extent. The risk is that there will be reviews that most are images and almost no written text. Sometime it might be a fun way to describe your feelings, but not too often.

message 44: by Lori K (new)

And I love your images, Ing. They are always appropriate.

message 47: by Isabel (last edited Apr 09, 2014 03:25PM) (new)

Isabel I like to see one picture or gif in a review, sexy ones of course! I like to read what readers think about the book, even if it is a long review... When there are lots and lots of gifs/pics, usually I give up and don't see everything!

message 48: by Anke (new)

Anke Sorry if I rain in anybody's parade, but - appropriate is not a factor for me. I want to READ about someone's opinion of a book. Not about their emotions-in-pictures or their this-quote-is-so-great; I want to know about others having the same opinion or the exact opposite of it:) Yes, I like reading the 1* reviews! What I don't like are pics with added three words on top and then another mediocre short sentence following. I tell you - as soon as there is the first pic, I'm off. It could be the best, profound review - don't care. I'm not a child, I can read and I don't need visual aids to get someone's point. Trust me - I'm able to get the gist:)
