Reading the "Catcher in the Rye" in this era in contrast to when it was written is truly fascinating! For example J.D. writes about a situation where Holden's younger sister is asked by her mother if she was smoking a cigarette, even though she did not she lied and said yes, however the reaction was what got me! "I don't like that Pheobe I don't like that at all!" (177) was all the reprimand she got, a 10 year old!

The author, J.D. Salinger incorporated some very interesting vocabulary of the time. A couple words that were used were "grand" or "terrific" words nowadays you hear almost no one say! "My mother has terrific taste in some things.."(160) "oh how grand! marvelous!" (89) this shows how J.D. used the vocabulary of his era. Really interesting to see how much things change and develop, the evolution of vocabulary.

Catcher in the rye so far has been a great book! The tone and vocabulary used my main character Holden is just so fascinating because it's used as in the era, the era of 1946. Words such as "sonuvabitch" or "whaddya" and "willya" and countless others add to the generic atmosphere of the 1940s. "Whaddya mean so what, I told you it had to be a godamn house or something."(40) this shows just how different language was.
