The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb

From the intro to "The Speckled Band" "...I woke one morning to find Sherlock Holmes standing, fully dressed, by the side of my bed.... 'Very sorry to knock you up, Watson,' said he, 'but it's the common lot this morning. Mrs. Hudson has been knocked up, she retorted upon me, and I you.'" I know the Brits mean something different when they say "knocked up" but still. *snicker* and the slashers go wild. Hee!

Next, one of my favs: "The Adventure of the Speckled Band."

"Outside, the stars were shining coldly in a cloudless sky, and the breath of the passers-by blew out into smoke like so many pistol shots."
