Rogerson has learned to hit Caitlin only on places where she can hide the evidence (arms, legs, shoulders). She has begun to wear only long sleeves and long pants to hide the bruises. It really reminds me how much parents don't know their children and what is really going on. Her parents are preoccupied with her sister to notice how deeply troubled Caitlin is and that she needs help now.

Rogerson's abuse is finally revealed by the end of Chapter 12. Caitlin was very anxious beforehand knowing he would react due to her tardiness. Out of rage, Rogerson beats Caitlin out in public and the police are called. Her parents and neighbors are all shocked and devastated. They blame themselves for not knowing and regret their mistakes. Caitlin is broken without Rogerson because she loves him still.

Chapter 11 begins with Caitlin explaining how Rogerson's abuse has become something of the norm and how her parents do not realize or see the signs. They are still distracted by Cassandra leaving and continue to watch the television just to see a glimpse of their eldest child. Caitlin is very interested in photography and uses it as her escape from life. She loves Rogerson even though he abuses her.

Chapter 8 marks the first time where Rogerson hits Caitlin. This pattern of behavior continues to exist throughout. He keeps slapping and punching her but Caitlin's parents are too preoccupied with Cassandra, Caitlin's older sister, who ran away with her boyfriend to notice the troubles Caitlin is facing. Caitlin does not leave Rogerson although he continues to abuse her. It seems like she misses her sister even more

There has been a lot going on so far. Chapter 7 ends with Caitlin and Rogerson at Corinna and Dave's place. Rogerson is introduced back in Chapter 6 and it is revealed that he is a "bad boy." He is very rich but you can tell he has many problems and inner turmoils. I don't think he is going to be a positive influence on Caitlin's life because he is conflicted and tortured by his demons. Caitlin will depend on him.

The book starts off with the main character Caitlin's memory of her sister Cassandra. Caitlin talks a lot about her sister and the author spends a chapter or two around their relationship. Cassandra was a stellar student and athlete. She gets accepted into Yale but later revealed that she has run away with her boyfriend. Caitlin joins the cheerleading team for her mother to have something to do and keep her busy.
