Jack, oh my god, is killing me. I cried already twice. Now, I cry easily but jeez! When he has to count the thumps while hiding in the closet until "Old Nick" is done. How sad!@!!! His innocence and his outlook on the world is so sad. His mother is going to have problems if they escape.

The ending was very sweet, the last 10% of the book up to the ending dragged. Overall, a must listen to audiobook. The kid that is the reader for Jack is unbelievable. He blew me away at his performance. If you never heard an audiobook, this is the one to listen to.

Slightly dragging right now. It seems like (wait I can't say since it will give the 1st half of the book away). Never mind..

Anything I say will be a spoiler. I don't know why I'm reading 2 books at the same time that are making me cry! On a funny note, I'm walking my dog, tears going down my face (told you I cry easily) and an old neighbor asks if I'm ok. I say "I'm reading a sad book" and walk on. Of course, he looks at me strange. I didn't realize why till later.. no book in hand. He must of thought I was nuts.

Catherine I just read the summary for this. Sounds sad. :(

Are the thumps from a headboard or a fist?

new_user :'( I don't think I could read it.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker It is very sad but I'm hopeful for a positive ending. We'll see!

Tammy Chase I am soooo dreading this book but of course, can't wait to read it. Not too many storylines compel me like this one has.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker If you listen to audiobooks, it is an incredible audiobook. It is rare multi-reader audiobook. They actually have a child reading Jack's part. It really is one of the best "performed" audiobooks I've listened to. In addition, the story is like a car crash, you shouldn't look but you can't look away from it!

Catherine I read some of the reviews, and the more in depth description really reminds me of the kidnapping involving Josef Fritzl and the other kidnapping involving JC Dugard.

I couldn't either.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker It is sad. Because of Jack's innocent look at his world (he does not yet know that he was born a product of a kidnapper and his mom) and because he does not know that his status in the room is anything outside the normal (though I do admit, he is gaining knowledge as we go along that things aren't quite right), there is something beautiful about the story especially the love the mom has for her son and the need to protect him at all costs.

The story is not like Living Dead Girl. It is from a boy's perspective that is hopeful and innocent where Living Dead Girl was from the perspective of a girl without hope.
