Not loving this, I think it plods. The Irish quartet isn't nearly as suspenseful anymore and the blown up cast of characters elsewhere are used to little effect. Lots of bureaucracy and factions that aren't particularly interesting.

The meeting between Herity (plus priest and child) and O'Neill and their agreement to spend a month guiding him to his destination goes over way too easily.

Not sure why the priest would offer clothing and shoes and then make a half-hearted attempt to stab O'Neill, especially because O'Neill doesn't think it was just a warning to go and not come back. Hrm.

I must stay in the wrong hotels because the Spanish maid in the French hotel is very accommodating, mothering O'Dell through his illness.

Short chapters make this fly, even though it's a tome. All the Ireland references seem a bit forced, sort of like Herbert went there on vacation and decided to name drop everything he remembered and then some.
