"Although some of his proposals had been radical in nature, his intention in every field, from finance to constitution to Irish trade, was to bring about practical rather than revolutionary change. Not only was his mind naturally attuned to searching for workable remedies to complex problems, it was also his political instinct to seek improvements to the established order of things rather than to overturn that order"

Although I admit to finding the victorian era more interesting, one can help but be interested in the dramatic elections of late the 18th century. Within a few years Great Britain had 5 different administrations. "Honest billy" however managed with his cool demeanor and rigirous application of political principles to achieve some stability (once he became PM). Hague is a bit long winded but nontheless a good read.

I was worried at first at the length of the biography but so far William Hague has a light touch. It was interesting to read about William pitt the elder (or the "Great Commoner" as his was known before he became the 1st Earl of Chatham). The elder Pitt seemed to have pursued a sound policy: focus on free trade and naval supremacy.
