A murmur ran around the room as Will smiled at Jem. It was a smile James knew well: the very specific smile Will had only for his parabatai. If it was odd to see someone smile at a Silent Brother like that, the oddness had long since faded for James; this was his father and his uncle Jem, as he had always known them.

a single tear definitely did not stream down my face. it definitely didn’t.

Will gave Thomas a hard look and, after a moment, said intently, “Is Gideon aware that he still owes me twenty pounds?”

“Yes,” said Thomas, without being able to stop himself, “but he is pretending not to remember.”

“I knew it!” cried Will. He turned to the Inquisitor with a triumphant look. “I believe we’re done here.”

“And I almost shot him with an arrow,” said Christopher sorrowfully.
“Surely you could refrain from doing that again, er, which one are you? Cecily’s son? Try not to shoot arrows at James,” said Magnus.

...“Or the Italian girl?”
“Her name was Filomena,” Thomas said quietly.
Bridgestock scowled. “Irrelevant.”
“It probably wasn’t irrelevant to Filomena,” said James.

Thomas opened his mouth, closed it, and opened it again. “May I have your permission to shout, keeping in mind I am not shouting at you?” he said to Cordelia.
“Oh, quite,” she said. “I like a good shouting in general.”

Will was looking at Tessa, his blue eyes wide. “Can I?”
Tessa smiled indulgently, as if Will had asked for a second helping of cake. “Oh, go ahead.”
Will made a whooping sound.
