"Sing to me o muse of that man of many troubles, Odysseus skilled in all ways on contending who wondered far after he helped sack the great city of troy. Sing through me and tell the tale of his suffering his trials and adventure and his bloody homecoming" (Hinds 1). This quote tells the reader what the book will be about. The quote is paired with an establishing shot which provides further world building.

“So, you ask me the name I’m known by, Cyclops?
I will tell you. But you must give me a guest-gift
as you’ve promised. Nobody —that’s my name" (Hinds 134).

I chose this quote because it distinguishes Odysseus from other classical heroes. In this scene he uses deception in order to overpower a foe rather than using brute power. This helps convey the idea that knowledge can equate to power.

"Ah, how shameless—the way these mortals blame the gods. They themselves, with their own reckless ways, compound their pains beyond their proper share" (Hinds 52)
I choose this quote because it discusses the idea that humans avoid putting themselves at fault in order to keep their prides from shattering. It makes a statement that this idea is not something to revere.
