The setting of The Hobbit takes place in Middle-Earth, but is restricted to the west side. The main setting of The Hobbit is the mountain. The reason it takes place in the mountain is because the main antagonist Smaug killed the King under the mountain and took over the gold in the mountain. It also takes place in Rivendell and in Laketown where they went before they went to the mountain.

The two standout character archetypes are hero and mentor. The hero is Bilbo. He must kill the dragon Smaug and reclaim the treasure for the dwarves. The mentor is Gandolf. He has to teach Bilbo everything he needs to know because Bilbo only wants to be in his Hobbit hole.
