Honestly, I'm drawing a blank as to why I didn't give this 5 stars back when it came out; the writing is easily Correia's best to date (well... I haven't read the sequels) and my best guess is I was just bummed out at the fact that it wasn't more Monster Hunter or Grimnoir, which were near the top of my reading list at the time (still love 'em but as the releases have slowed down the fire has dimmed, so to speak).

wow, it's a good thing I decided to reread this before going on to books 2 and 3 because there's a ton of the story that I had completely forgotten in the intervening years
