I notice that Salva is slowly going over the fact that he cannot find his family at the moment. He doesn't keep wondering about where his family is. Instead, he looks forward to a new life. Of course, he still cares very much for his family, but it just seems like he would be fine, even if someone told him that his family was dead. He appears to accept that he has no family at the moment.

in chapters 10 and 11, I notice the theme of how hope is one of the most precious resources. Even after Uncle dies, he still has the hope to keep going. Uncle and Marial's death encouraged him to finish the trip. "It was almost as if they had left their strength with him, to help him on his journey."-pg 65. Another piece of evidence is his hope to find his family. "If they are here, I will find them."-pg 67.
