Notes:
(1) "I rank music somewhere between hair ribbons and rainbows in terms of usefulness. At least a rainbow gives you a tip about the weather."
- I never realized how bloodless Katniss is as a character. Not understanding what love is, and now seeing no value in music.
(2) A lot of foreshadowing in this book. Shooting apples earlier is suddenly a crucially useful skill.

(1) "It's no good loving me because I'm never going to get married anyway and he'd just end up hating me later instead of sooner."
- Anti-social to the very end.
(2) Now I'll have to write my review, which is especially daunting. Firstly, because it's a very popular book, so more people will care. Second, because my other review is one of my best, and I can't top it.

(1) '"Peeta!" I call out ... I hear my name in response, but it's not his voice. It's a voice that provokes first irritation and then eagerness. Effie.'
- Irritation and eagerness... sums her up.
(2) "Effie's somewhat teary and keeps patting my hair and talking about how she told everyone we were pearls."
- Nice callback to her "pressure turns coal into pearls" line.

Notes:
(1) "The whole horrible thing hits me. The blonde hair, the green eyes, the number. it's Glimmer."
- Don't know if it's confirmed later on, but I've always wondered whether these are actually tributes or just made to look like them to mess with people's heads.
(2) It's ironic, how body armor was the ultimate prize, but ended up being the source of horrible suffering.

Notes:
(1) "[Foxface]'s very clever, Peeta. Well, she was. Until you outfoxed her."
- As a pun aficionado, I approve.
(2) "It dawns on me that I haven't been very nice to Peeta today."
- She's learning, at least.
(3) "Just in case Cato decided to pull a Foxface on us, we circle the Cornucopia..."
- And thus, Foxface was immortalized as a tactic in the Hunger Games playbook.

Notes:
(1) "I can feel Effie Trinket shuddering at my manners."
- I'm sure Effie's watching and taking notes for later.
(2) 'My father's voice comes back to me. "Not these, Katniss. Never these. They're nightlock. You'll be dead..."'
- In the book Katniss reacts to Peeta finding the nightlock, and what ensues, as a happy accident. In the film, she angrily scolds him for it.

(1) "The whole of Panem believes [Peeta] to be hopelessly in love with me, and I'll admit it, there are moments when he makes me believe it myself?"
- Alternatively, he sucks at acting and it might actually be true.
(2) "I feel Gale's gray eyes watching me watching Peeta, all the way from District 12."
- Says the girl who insists there was nothing romantic with Gale.

Notes:
(1) "He doesn't seem angry about my tricking him, drugging him, and running off to the feast."
- Obviously he still wants to get with her... or appear to.
(2) "I'm almost foolishly happy and then confusion sweeps over me. Because we're supposed to be making up this stuff ... not actually being in love."
- Katniss seems unaware that love isn't automatic, but develops.

Notes:
(1) "I lay next to Peeta in the bag, trying to absorb every bit of his fever heat. It's strange to be so physically close to someone who's so distant."
- That's making lemons out of lemonade.
- Wait, he's the distant one?
(2) "Gale's not my boyfriend, but would he be, if I opened that door? He talked about us running away together."
- Gee, no good at signals, is she?

(1) "Getting the broth into Peeta takes an hour of coaxing, begging, threatening, and yes, kissing, but finally, sip by sip, he empties the pot."
- Kissing: the universal currency.
(2) '"No more kisses for you until you've eaten," I say.'
- Way to lay down the law!
(3) "Eat every bite of the soup no matter how disgusting it is!"
- I'm sure her cooking's not that bad.

Notes:
(1) Katniss: "I guess all those hours decorating cakes paid off."
Peeta: "Yes, frosting. The final defense of the dying."
- Frosting can be a powerful weapon... especially against those with a predilection for cake.
(2) Peeta: "Look, if I don't make it back –"
Katniss: "Don't talk like that. I didn't drain all that pus for nothing."
- Pus can be a powerful incentive.

I know! We won't notice teh foreshadowing the first time, only when we reread. And I think that even though Katniss was bloodless in the first book, she did develop in the next ^-^

Yeah, I fully expect to see a lot of character development over the course of the books. It's always the people at the extremes that have the most room for growth :)
Well, consider living that way when all your mental and physical resources are used for survival. Music is essential, to me, for my mental health, but I can see how in that situation it could just be something she doesn't have room to consider.
Considering (view spoiler) is one of her fond music memories, there probably isn't much upbeat, happy music in this world, so I can see her point.
TMR wrote: "Ah Katniss doesn't have time for materialistic stuff."I don't know that she doesn't have time for music, so much as she doesn't find it particularly useful. Later on, though, and into the next books, she does develop both a practical and symbolic appreciation for music (view spoiler), so there's that.
*raises eyebrow* why in the world do all ur coments hv spoilerss xDD it then is difficult fr me to resist to hv peek of ur comment when i hvnt even reached tht part of the book xDD
Amy wrote: "Well, consider living that way when all your mental and physical resources are used for survival. Certainly more empathetic and less antisocial than she starts the books as.
Linda ~ they got the mustard out! ~ wrote: "Considering [spoilers removed] is one of her fond music memories, there probably isn't much upbeat, happy music in this world, so I can see her point."Well, there's also that lullaby she sings for Prim, and later sings to Rue... though that's not exactly upbeat, and seems entirely imbued with sadness by the end.

It's a double-edge sword, spoiler tags. On the one hand, they keep spoilers at bay, on the other hand, they just call out to be opened like an itch needing to be scratched :)
Jayson wrote: "Aarja wrote: "I know! We won't notice teh foreshadowing the first time, only when we reread. And I think that even though Katniss was bloodless in the first book, she did develop in the next ^-^"A..."
Yes, I agree too :)
Jayson wrote: "Amy wrote: "Well, consider living that way when all your mental and physical resources are used for survival. Music is essential, to me, for my mental health, but I can see how in that situation it..."Yes, that is probably true!
Sanjana wrote: "world with out music.. is soo sad..."Yeah, makes people awful glum too. Katniss doesn't know how to handle music when she does experience it, it's only associated with sadness for her now.
Layla wrote: " [spoilers removed]"Yeah, I think that's all definitely in play. Music is irrevocably tied to bad memories for her.
Annie wrote: "Hair ribbons and rainbows!! Wow I don’t remember Katniss being this cold blooded"My feelings exactly! I don't remember noticing it before, but I guess you pick up on all sorts of things on a reread.
…I'm actually surprised I very much noticed the hair ribbons part now seeing you and others missed it.
Koby Z. (KZ Reads) wrote: "…I'm actually surprised I very much noticed the hair ribbons part now seeing you and others missed it."
Well, I'm sure I caught it the first time around, it just didn't make enough of an impression on me to remember it after so many years.
✝✝ Christina ✝✝✝ wrote: "kinda ironic since she gave [spoilers removed]"Well, I suppose to say that hair ribbons have low usefulness doesn't equate to being useless. I'm sure she recognizes the way in which it can be used and useful. Additionally, animal ribbons aren't hair ribbons, and so perhaps she sees them as having a very high usefulness. Useful in making her happy, for example. 🤷♂️
✝✝ Christina ✝✝✝ wrote: "...i don't think she;'s the kind of person to classify ribbons"
Personally, I wouldn't claim to know her personality so well as to take that for a given. 🤷♂️
✝✝ Christina ✝✝✝ wrote: "if she thinks it's uselss, why would she bother"Which can only mean she doesn't think it's useless, albeit of low usefulness. Exactly my point.
…POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
One from book 2:
"I rank Gamemakers somewher below maggots in terms of creatures I want in contact with my skin."Another comparison!
