Notes:
(1) Katniss: "I guess all those hours decorating cakes paid off."
Peeta: "Yes, frosting. The final defense of the dying."
- Frosting can be a powerful weapon... especially against those with a predilection for cake.
(2) Peeta: "Look, if I don't make it back –"
Katniss: "Don't talk like that. I didn't drain all that pus for nothing."
- Pus can be a powerful incentive.

Notes:
(1) "It's no good loving me because I'm never going to get married anyway and he'd just end up hating me later instead of sooner."
- Anti-social to the very end.
(2) Now I'll have to write my review, which is especially daunting. Firstly, because it's a very popular book, so more people will care. Second, because my other review is one of my best, and I can't top it.

Notes:
(1) '"Peeta!" I call out ... I hear my name in response, but it's not his voice. It's a voice that provokes first irritation and then eagerness. Effie.'
- Irritation and eagerness... sums her up.
(2) "Effie's somewhat teary and keeps patting my hair and talking about how she told everyone we were pearls."
- Nice callback to her "pressure turns coal into pearls" line.

Notes:
(1) "The whole horrible thing hits me. The blonde hair, the green eyes, the number. it's Glimmer."
- Don't know if it's confirmed later on, but I've always wondered whether these are actually tributes or just made to look like them to mess with people's heads.
(2) It's ironic, how body armor was the ultimate prize, but ended up being the source of horrible suffering.

Notes:
(1) "[Foxface]'s very clever, Peeta. Well, she was. Until you outfoxed her."
- As a pun aficionado, I approve.
(2) "It dawns on me that I haven't been very nice to Peeta today."
- She's learning, at least.
(3) "Just in case Cato decided to pull a Foxface on us, we circle the Cornucopia..."
- And thus, Foxface was immortalized as a tactic in the Hunger Games playbook.

Notes:
(1) "I can feel Effie Trinket shuddering at my manners."
- I'm sure Effie's watching and taking notes for later.
(2) 'My father's voice comes back to me. "Not these, Katniss. Never these. They're nightlock. You'll be dead..."'
- In the book Katniss reacts to Peeta finding the nightlock, and what ensues, as a happy accident. In the film, she angrily scolds him for it.

(1) "The whole of Panem believes [Peeta] to be hopelessly in love with me, and I'll admit it, there are moments when he makes me believe it myself?"
- Alternatively, he sucks at acting and it might actually be true.
(2) "I feel Gale's gray eyes watching me watching Peeta, all the way from District 12."
- Says the girl who insists there was nothing romantic with Gale.

- Obviously he still wants to get with her... or appear to.
(2) "I'm almost foolishly happy and then confusion sweeps over me. Because we're supposed to be making up this stuff ... not actually being in love."
- Katniss seems unaware that love isn't automatic, but develops.

- That's making lemons out of lemonade.
- Wait, he's the distant one?
(2) "Gale's not my boyfriend, but would he be, if I opened that door? He talked about us running away together."
- Gee, no good at signals, is she?

(1) "Getting the broth into Peeta takes an hour of coaxing, begging, threatening, and yes, kissing, but finally, sip by sip, he empties the pot."
- Kissing: the universal currency.
(2) '"No more kisses for you until you've eaten," I say.'
- Way to lay down the law!
(3) "Eat every bite of the soup no matter how disgusting it is!"
- I'm sure her cooking's not that bad.

- She's got to get over that. Undershorts are the one piece of clothing that definitely needs a washing.
(2) Katniss: "Here, cover yourself with this and I'll wash your shorts."
Peeta: "Oh, I don't care if you see me."
Katniss: "I care, all right?!"

aarja Frosting. Oh how I hate it. Though I love bread, I need to adjust something for my dear Peeta, don't I ;)
And oh, that kiss, I ship Everlark like krazy with a k :D

Sasha i can't believe someone could be so skilled at frosting that they could camouflage themselves like that

I know, right?! It's Peeta.

I don't so much ship Katniss and Peeta as much as I really dislike Gale :)

Jayson Sakshi wrote: "i can't believe someone could be so skilled at frosting that they could camouflage themselves like that"

Well, this does take place in the future, so perhaps frosting technology's advanced to that level of camouflage? 🤷‍♂️

I am not sure if I resent Gale, I mean, he is fine as a best friend to me. In Catching Fire, I was dying over Everthorne, when I changed sides to Everlark. The scar is still left. Looks like Suzanne Collins loves playing with emotions.

Also, will you be planning to read the Shadowhunter Chronicles later on? It's good, really nice.

I find the best authors also tend to be the cruelest :)

I wasn't planning on it, but thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely look into it :)

Yes, the best authors are the cruelest.

Possibly your edition is. I wouldn't know. I'm listening to the audiobook.

Jenny Clark I can see frosting skills translateing to camouflage skills. They are both a very nuanced skill. My friend is a baker, and some of her cakes she actually uses a paintbrush for details.

Yes, I'm absolutely on board with that. Cake decorating's quite the artform, and I've seen some incredibly intricate ones on display :)

Jayson ‎ wrote: "This book is 367 pages isnt it?"

Entirely depends on the edition.

Jayson ‎ wrote: "is this book one?"

You got to be more specific than than. Look up the ISBN or actually count the pages. Beyond that, I can't help you.

Annie Your updates are making me want to reread this. I don’t remember a lot of it and don’t remember much of the movies either!! So now I’m unsure whether to reread first or watch the movies first. It makes sense though, it’s been years since I’ve read and seen them

Linda ~ they got the mustard out! ~ Frosting as a weapon would be a double-edged piping bag tip. It could put your enemies into a sugar coma, but it could also give them a sugar high. Choose wisely. 😂 😂

I love how Katniss expresses her feelings. See, Peeta? She cares. 😂 😂 (Peeta must be learning to speak Katnissese the same way Katniss is learning to decode all of Haymitch's clues.)

I'm happy to hear that, Annie! Glad I could get you interested in it again. Personally, I'm always an advocate of reading the book first. Though, in my particular situation, because I'm pulling clips from the films to make gifs, I'm actually watching the films first. You can go either way, I don't see any significant difference apart from having scenes from the film replayed in my head when I go through the book. 🤷‍♂️

Very true. You'd have to be aware of their individual glucose tolerances :)

Yes, I'd say Peeta is extremely fluent in Katnissese. Really, he's playing her like a fiddle, making her feel like all the kissing is her idea. It's actually quite devious. lol

Britton I usually hate contrived YA dystopias like this one, but I don't actually. The second one I can't stand however. It's depiction of trauma is borderline offensive.

Well, glad to know this was an exception to your usual YA dystopia hate :)

xenization. i have two points to make. first of all, i never understood how decorating cakes could lead to peeta being that skilled of a painter. cake decorating to me can be intricate, sure, but i always thought it would be rather simple in district 12. second of all, i now want cake, damn you.

Jayson xenization. wrote: "i have two points to make. first of all, i never understood how decorating cakes could lead to peeta being that skilled of a painter. cake decorating to me can be intricate, sure, but i always thou..."

Well, could be that Peeta was already a naturally talented painter, and that cake decorating gave him a method of practicing and refining his skills. I live in Canada, and all our best athletes play hockey. If hockey wasn't popular here, they'd all probably take their athletic skill to other sports. So, in the absence of fine arts in District 12, cake decorating's probably as good of an outlet for talent to manifest as any. 🤷‍♂️

As for your second observation, you have my sympathies and apologies 😁🎂🍰
