"He acted with the same stealth he had used when he trailed the coyotes and wolves to steal their kills. He could sit against a scrub cedar for hours until he seemed to be part of it."

Why this book was never made into a movie, I'll never know. What a great book! James Work's books are going to have my attention from here on. He is a native to the Great Plains and he takes the time to research out the areas of Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah and Montana. His book was rich in descriptions of the land and he studied the materials in use at the time in order to give accurate descriptions.

"They came to a low rise and into a wetter valley where there was green grass and groves of chokecherry and plum and willow. Three prairie chickens flew up from the side of the road."

"Far away across many miles of prairie, the shaggy figure huddled in his stinking hides, too frozen to sleep. His teeth chattered, and he could not stop his mind from seeing the nightmare banshee." This book is unlike any "cowboy" book I've ever read. It delves deep into the soul of a man who's suffered deep trauma/assault. It penetrates into the apprehension he feels... longing, in fear, for companionship.
