(1) "Mushroom soup, bitter greens with tomatoes the size of peas, rare roast beef sliced as thin as paper, noodles in a green sauce, cheese that melts on your tongue served with sweet blue grapes."
- Second food list already. What is this? a George R.R. Martin book?
(2) "District 12 ... beyond us, there's only wilderness."
- "Wilderness"... nice euphemism for Canada.

(1) "It's no good loving me because I'm never going to get married anyway and he'd just end up hating me later instead of sooner."
- Anti-social to the very end.
(2) Now I'll have to write my review, which is especially daunting. Firstly, because it's a very popular book, so more people will care. Second, because my other review is one of my best, and I can't top it.

- Irritation and eagerness... sums her up.
(2) "Effie's somewhat teary and keeps patting my hair and talking about how she told everyone we were pearls."
- Nice callback to her "pressure turns coal into pearls" line.

(1) "The whole horrible thing hits me. The blonde hair, the green eyes, the number. it's Glimmer."
- Don't know if it's confirmed later on, but I've always wondered whether these are actually tributes or just made to look like them to mess with people's heads.
(2) It's ironic, how body armor was the ultimate prize, but ended up being the source of horrible suffering.

(1) "[Foxface]'s very clever, Peeta. Well, she was. Until you outfoxed her."
- As a pun aficionado, I approve.
(2) "It dawns on me that I haven't been very nice to Peeta today."
- She's learning, at least.
(3) "Just in case Cato decided to pull a Foxface on us, we circle the Cornucopia..."
- And thus, Foxface was immortalized as a tactic in the Hunger Games playbook.

(1) "I can feel Effie Trinket shuddering at my manners."
- I'm sure Effie's watching and taking notes for later.
(2) 'My father's voice comes back to me. "Not these, Katniss. Never these. They're nightlock. You'll be dead..."'
- In the book Katniss reacts to Peeta finding the nightlock, and what ensues, as a happy accident. In the film, she angrily scolds him for it.

Peeta: "Yes, frosting. The final defense of the dying."
- Frosting can be a powerful weapon... especially against those with a predilection for cake.

Katniss: "Don't talk like that. I didn't drain all that pus for nothing."

Jenny wrote: "Yall have lots of wilderness tho lol!"True enough. Frankly, "Wilderness" would be a much cooler name :)
I really don't enjoy when books just go on and on about food and how great it looks and tastes, not only does it make me super hungry, but it also bores me.
Maja wrote: "1 i've missed the food lists though. Very fond memories of those from your GoT read."I miss them too. Beyond Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter really didn't have any. They seem to be back for this series, though :)
Adam wrote: "But also, is she wrong?"No, beyond border and port cites, Canada's almost all wilderness.
Layla wrote: "I really don't enjoy when books just go on and on about food and how great it looks and tastes, not only does it make me super hungry, but it also bores me."It got really tedious during my Song of Ice and Fire reread, but it also made for good fodder as a running joke :)
Aarja wrote: "I love when books talk about food! God, the details....😌"It certainly has its appeal, and a definite effect on the imagination :)
I think District 12 was supposed to be around Appalachia. So... not really close to Canada at all. These were very Americocentric books, though. We have no idea what happened to Canada... let alone the rest of the world!
La Coccinelle wrote: "I think District 12 was supposed to be around Appalachia. So... not really close to Canada at all. These were very Americocentric books, though. We have no idea what happened to Canada... let alon..."
From all the maps I've seen, "beyond" District 12 would have to be Canada, or at least Ontario, since District 13's a nuclear wasteland and it's otherwise bordered by other districts and the Atlantic Ocean. Also, what used to coastline seems to be under water from rising sea levels, so I'm guessing a lot of Canada's under water.
I was going by the maps on this site (which also says District 12 is in Appalachia: "According to the Panem map shown in The Hunger Games Adventures and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, it is located in the Appalachian Mountains in region belonging to North and South Carolina").
La Coccinelle wrote: "I was going by the maps on this site (which also says District 12 is in Appalachia: "According to the Panem map shown in The Hunger Games Adventures and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, it is locat..."Yeah, that makes sense. The book does state that it's in Appalachia. I'd still contend that the wilderness beyond would still have be Canada regardless what map you're looking at. It's the only applicable area that's not other habitable districts or under water.
Sakshi wrote: "Ikr there's a lot of talk about food"Not quite at George R.R. Martin levels of food lists, but for such relatively short books, it gets up there :)
now, i'm quite fond of my food, but some of these extravagant foods really do not sound good to me. unless that's the whole point, to the make them sound ridiculous. much like fancy food now, i suppose.
xenization. wrote: "now, i'm quite fond of my food, but some of these extravagant foods really do not sound good to me. unless that's the whole point, to the make them sound ridiculous. much like fancy food now, i sup..."I don't know if these particular foods are all that extravagant. I think I've personally had all of them. Though, I have come across lists in these books that are sort of ridiculous, so I get what you're saying.
Jayson wrote: "Sakshi wrote: "Ikr there's a lot of talk about food"Not quite at George R.R. Martin levels of food lists, but for such relatively short books, it gets up there :)"
The food lists were fine for me, I don't even remember them. But the endless paragraphs describing what each person was wearing, the standards of their houses, the histories of their weapons, just to never see most of those characters again? Martin won a special place in my heart for that. 😡 😂

The food lists ..."
Martin certainly doesn't skimp on the details. To think, perhaps if he did skimp on the details, the next book might be out by now :)
