(2) "Don't be so stupid ... He is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is. But because two can play at this game, I stand on tiptoe and kiss his cheek."
(3) It's all about the politics of kissing, this book.

(1) "It's no good loving me because I'm never going to get married anyway and he'd just end up hating me later instead of sooner."
- Anti-social to the very end.
(2) Now I'll have to write my review, which is especially daunting. Firstly, because it's a very popular book, so more people will care. Second, because my other review is one of my best, and I can't top it.

(1) '"Peeta!" I call out ... I hear my name in response, but it's not his voice. It's a voice that provokes first irritation and then eagerness. Effie.'
- Irritation and eagerness... sums her up.
(2) "Effie's somewhat teary and keeps patting my hair and talking about how she told everyone we were pearls."
- Nice callback to her "pressure turns coal into pearls" line.

- Don't know if it's confirmed later on, but I've always wondered whether these are actually tributes or just made to look like them to mess with people's heads.
(2) It's ironic, how body armor was the ultimate prize, but ended up being the source of horrible suffering.

- As a pun aficionado, I approve.
(2) "It dawns on me that I haven't been very nice to Peeta today."
- She's learning, at least.
(3) "Just in case Cato decided to pull a Foxface on us, we circle the Cornucopia..."
- And thus, Foxface was immortalized as a tactic in the Hunger Games playbook.

- I'm sure Effie's watching and taking notes for later.
(2) 'My father's voice comes back to me. "Not these, Katniss. Never these. They're nightlock. You'll be dead..."'
- In the book Katniss reacts to Peeta finding the nightlock, and what ensues, as a happy accident. In the film, she angrily scolds him for it.

Sasha lol Peeta's actions seem genuine to me

Katniss just seems like one of those girls who's never known a nice guy. So, she always assumes there's an ulterior motive to normal acts of kindness. I mean, her base point of comparison is Gale, and he's a jerk.

Virginia Ronan ♥ Herondale ♥ Haha! Yep, Gale is truly a jerk. Thanks for saying that, Jayson. I never understood why people liked him more than Peeta. Because Peeta is such an honest and kind soul.

Yeah, one of the first things Gale does in the books is make fun of Madge the mayor's daughter. I'm like, "man, that's not cool." Katniss does go on and on about how tall, dark and handsome he is, so I guess there's that. 🤷‍♂️

Rochelle ✿ Katniss should have stayed single! I've read this series more than four times and I never once felt chemistry between Katniss and Gale or Katniss and Peeta

Fair point. Though it's difficult to stray too far from the magnetic pull of YA tropes, of which the love triangle seems an essential ingredient :)

Lavender Mystique I kinda like both Peeta and Gale. So yes, Peeta is nice and kind and caring, but Gale is not bad. I mean Gale is caring toward Katniss and her family, and also his own family. He's brave and determined, and yeah, he is handsome, so there's that. Nice review anyway Jayson! :))

Thanks, Lavender! I see your point. Gale is not without his positive qualities :)

Lavender Mystique Thank you for getting my point! Sorry if i offended u somehow tho.

No worries, no offense taken at all. I'm all about taking in different and alternative opinions on things 😁👍

Linda ~ they got the mustard out! ~ Katniss may be street smart, but she gets lost when it comes to emotions. Then again, she's about to go into a death match, so constant vigilance being her modus operandi isn’t a bad idea, necessarily.

I don't care for love triangles, but I don't recall this one bothering me all that much. Katniss never really seemed to feel that way about Gale, and with the trauma of the games and the "band of brothers" bond she forms with Peeta, I just couldn't see it working out any other way.

Yeah, it doesn't get too love-triangly until the next book. Gale's fairly insignificant in the first book. It's not like in the film where they cut away to him and play up his emotional reaction to watching the Games on television.

Layla ⚠️Spoilers ahead if you haven't read all 3 books!!⚠️
I think opinons on who katniss should have ended up with is split. I personally don't accept katniss and gale because it would have been too difficult after Prim and they always seemed to have a more sibling type bond that ended up disappearing in the war. If she would have ended up alone, that would have been acceptable because it would show that after everything she's been through can change a person and she is unable to rely on anyone else with all the loses she's faced. When she ended up with Peeta I was also okay with that, because they shared the same sort or trauma and there are only of handful living people that can say the same. he always stood by her and wanted to protect her from the beginning.not to mention the fact they spent a few years platonic-ish until they got together and a few years after that until they had kids, which would give time to sort of heal as best they could in their situation.

Yeah, I more or less agree. (view spoiler)

xenization. personally, having read the books/watched the movies multiple times (i like jennifer lawrence, sue me), something always felt off about katniss and peeta's relationship. i don't think katniss ever truly loved him romantically, she just thought she did, or at least that's what it seemed like to me. i mean, i'm not saying she should have ended up with gale, or anyone else for that matter, but i think maybe the series would have been better off without the forced romance, especially towards the end.

Jayson xenization. wrote: "personally, having read the books/watched the movies multiple times (i like jennifer lawrence, sue me), something always felt off about katniss and peeta's relationship. i don't think katniss ever ..."

That's interesting. It's been some years since I last read the books, but her relationship with Peeta never felt particularly forced to me. Perhaps that's just cloudy memory. I'm sure there's a lot of things I don't remember about the books. I'll be sure to pay close attention to that aspect of things this time around :)

Annie I didn’t feel either pairing, myself. I’d have been happy if the book left off with Katniss single, getting over her PTSD before meeting anyone else maybe...it’s sometimes good to leave the rest of the character’s life to the readers’ imagination

Jayson Annie wrote: "I didn’t feel either pairing, myself. I’d have been happy if the book left off with Katniss single, getting over her PTSD before meeting anyone else maybe...it’s sometimes good to leave the rest of..."

I can see that. I find that sometimes the pull of standard romance tropes in YA books is often an obligation that, while a popular formula, may not be right for every story.
