Kiss rejected! Sorry, Harry. She loves Ron.
Notes:
(1) Hermione: "I’m staying. Ron, we said we’d go with Harry, we said we’d help."
Ron: "I get it. You choose him."
Hermione: "Ron, no — please — come back, come back!"
- Ah, the subtext is exquisite.
(2) "[Hermione] threw herself into a chair, curled up, and started to cry."
- That's 4/7 books she's had a big Ron-cry.

(1) My audiobook re-read of "Harry Potter" is nearly at an end. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the great discussion and enthusiasm. It was like having one big buddy-read with hundreds, even thousands, of people. I know many of you friended and followed me because of my "Harry Potter" updates, and I hope you decide to stick around for what comes next :)

Thanks, Caro! Yeah, I feel the same way. Harry also has that line about loving Hermione like a sister, which that scene really contradicts.

Somehow if you just take Ron and Hermione together, they seem so wrong for each other. But we can't imagine them with anyone else. Also that dancing scene in the movie was just weird for me.

I agree. It's partly a consequence of them being the two sidekicks, so they're always going to be separate from Harry, and as a result closer with each other. They're always "Ron and Hermione" or "Hermione and Ron," like a couple already. As well, their whole relationship has been so loud and aggressive that it sort of imprints itself in your brain.
Yeah, that dancing scene served no purpose at all. If the whole point was that Harry wanted to cheer Hermione up after Ron left, then he failed because things just ended up the same as they were before. If his intention was to start something with Hermione, then he's a horrible person to take advantage of someone so vulnerable. Not to mention that he knows how both Ron and Hermione feel about each other. Not to mention that he's sort of still involved with Ginny, despite technically being broken up.
- ̗̀ Aileen ̖́- wrote: "I still think that Harry would have been the better match for Hermione!"You wouldn't be alone in thinking that. People who know the movies better than the books are particularly inclined to that opinion.
I think Hermione deserved so much better than Ron, he's fun sometimes but that's it for me. I lost count of all the times that he was petty or immature or just plain insensitive. This might be a super unpopular opinion but I was really hoping for Hermione and either Fred or George to end up together!
A "big Ron-cry" HAHHAHAH I will forever refer to it as that. But honestly if you're crying THAT much over a guy then come on... find someone else who doesn't make you cry so much!!

Kadi wrote: "A "big Ron-cry" HAHHAHAH I will forever refer to it as that. But honestly if you're crying THAT much over a guy then come on... find someone else who doesn't make you cry so much!!"Glad I could introduce that term to your Harry Potter experience. 😁👍
I think Hermione has big Ron-cries all the time because she cares deeply what he thinks of her. It's not like she cries over Malfoy or Umbridge or anybody else who acts horribly to her. She's got heightened hormones for Ron, so ugly-crying is simply a chemical reaction. You can't cry if there's no feels to cry over 😭😭
Jay, as a Harry Potter expert would you recommend reading all the books and then watching all the movies, or reading one book and then watching the movie?
That's an interesting way of looking at it. Maybe the cries aren't a bad thing, it just shows she cares and it's true Ron always comes round to her when it matters so... it works for them I guess. If it was me personally though I'd get so frustrated over crying that much over someone I'd say nope that's the end of that relationship. Unless they're really amazing but if they were would I even be crying in the first place🤔 This is why I find it hard to relate to Hermione on this front. Also it's kind of weird she often doesn't show that she cares about Ron until he does something and she starts crying about it. Nah I would've liked to see her shout and storm off more often instead of crying all the time!
Jenny wrote: "Jay, as a Harry Potter expert would you recommend reading all the books and then watching all the movies, or reading one book and then watching the movie?"Oh, I wouldn't say I'm a Harry Potter expert. I just read the books like anyone else. But I appreciate the sentiment :)
I'd read all the books first and then watch the movies. They're sufficiently different that you could get easily confused switching formats. I find that watching a film can displace what you know of the source material. Of course, if you're read the series before and have a firm understanding of the story, you can handle it however you like.
Kadi wrote: "That's an interesting way of looking at it. Maybe the cries aren't a bad thing, it just shows she cares and it's true Ron always comes round to her when it matters so... it works for them I guess. ..."I think she does a lot more shouting and storming off with Ron than she does crying. Bickering is sort of their thing, they might actually like it. Also, she's only really cried once from Ron being mean to her. That was in the first book with the troll in the bathroom. In the fourth book she cried because Ron got jealous, in the sixth book she cried because she got jealous, and in this books she cried because Ron left. So, crying seems to be a response to existing emotion rather than anything Ron does that's particularly mean-spirited. Even abandoning them in the woods was because he was being influenced by the locket. She certainly understood that since she kept begging him to take it off.
I understand Ron's insecurity ..but he should have trusted Hermoine moreAlso Harry would NEVER break the bro code

ya true poor him must have felt terrible!
People used to blame Ron pretty harshly for this scene. But now that the Ron-hate has died down they've taken to blaming Harry very harshly instead. And honestly, I don't blame either of them, they're all kids. I feel really sorry for them, because they are just kids after all. Also, dancing scene kind of annoyed me too. The movie missed the opportunity to show why Harry and Hermione needed Ron.

I blame it all on the evil locket fueling Ron's insecurities with rage. Also, book-Harry would never break the bro code, film-Harry has every intention, at least in the dance scene.
Daisy wrote: "ya true poor him must have felt terrible!"Harry or Ron? Ron for sure felt terrible about storming off. I don't know about Harry... probably more disappointed in himself than anything.

I never liked the dancing scene either. Totally pointless, and just make Harry look like a jerk. To your point, I think every movie missed the opportunity to show why Harry and Hermione needed Ron.

Wait Harry is the dangerous one? Or the wholesome one? Also... who on earth are all these girls you're naming?😂
Kadi wrote: "Wait Harry is the dangerous one? Or the wholesome one? Harry's the calm and boring one that just wants to be drama free.
Gee, I forget that people here so young, you don't even know Britney and Christina. How about "Taylor Swift or Katy Perry"? That more to your liking or still too old a reference? lol
Huh I guess Ron is the bad one. But still a pretty good kind of bad boy, there've been more hardcore bad boys out there. Never found either of them to be attractive to be honest. Possibly because it felt like I saw them grow up through the books so it's kinda weird to be attracted to them. Even though I was a kid when I read it myself😂Now Frodo on the other hand... that's one attractive hobbit. Doesn't hurt that Elijah Wood plays him in the movies
I've always thought you were pretty young too 👀how old are you Jay?!😂 Oh you mean like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera? But yeah I get you, kinda surprised you didn't say Jacob and Edward as your comparison bad boy/good boy. Or even better Gale and Peeta. Team Peeta definitely but both those boys are really good-looking whew😂

When your choices are Harry, Ron, Neville, Seamus and Dean, yes, Ron's obviously the bad-boy of the bunch.
I mean, young people still like Britney and Christina, right? It's still hip with the kids... 😥
Honestly, I've not read Twilight or seen the movies, so the whole Jacob and Edward thing didn't even cross my mind. Plus, I'm a guy! Gale and Peeta I understand. I'm with you, Team Peeta all the way 😁👍

LENA wrote: "Aaaah such a heartbreaking moment. This is where I lost my faith in Ron. He really hurt Hermione when he told her that she chose Harry over him. This whole part of the book always felt like a kind of divorce to me. Through the whole series it was always "Ron and Hermione" or "Hermione and Ron." They were always referred to as a pairing, like they were already a couple. So, when Ron tells her she chose Harry over him, it's like they were no longer "Ron and Hermione" anymore. But, I so give Ron some leeway since he was essentially possessed and guided by the locket.
Funny thing is if you read the whole book with the notion that Ron's worried that Harry's going to steal his girl, then all these lines keep popping out at you that have greater subtext.
