Notes:
(1) Harry: "We just need to wipe their memories."
Ron: "But I’ve never done a Memory Charm."
Hermione: "Nor have I ... but I know the theory."
- Didn't Hermione do a memory charm on her parents? I guess there's a difference between erasing a memory and implanting false ones.
(2) Ron takes every chance to hug Hermione. So he's either an opportunist or formed a habit.

Notes:
(1) My audiobook re-read of "Harry Potter" is nearly at an end. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the great discussion and enthusiasm. It was like having one big buddy-read with hundreds, even thousands, of people. I know many of you friended and followed me because of my "Harry Potter" updates, and I hope you decide to stick around for what comes next :)

Notes:
(1) Voldemort: "Pick up your little friend, Hagrid. And the glasses — put on the glasses — he must be recognizable —"
- Of course, the glasses... otherwise he'd be totally unrecognizable... a regular Clark Kent.
(2) Molly: "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH! ... OUT OF MY WAY! ... Get back! Get back! She is mine!"
- Well, at least we know where Ron gets his foul mouth from.

Notes:
(1) '"Explain," said Harry.
"But you already know," said Dumbledore. He twiddled his thumbs.'
- Always the teacher, Dumbledore. Makes you sound it out.
(2) Dumbledore: "Your wand imbibed some of the power and qualities of Voldemort’s wand ... and it regurgitated some of his own magic against him."
- Yuck! Voldemort magic apparently doesn't sit well in a wand's belly.

Notes:
(1) "He felt his heart pounding fiercely in his chest. How strange that in his dread of death, it pumped all the harder, valiantly keeping him alive."
- I don't find it strange at all. Harry's dreading death, after all.
(2) "He saw the mouth move and a flash of green light, and everything was gone."
- Huh, I thought Voldemort was more proficient in non-verbal spells.

(1) "[Harry] heard Snape shout at [Lily] in his humiliation and his fury, the unforgivable word: "Mudblood."
(2) Lily: "You call everyone of my birth Mudblood, Severus. Why should I be any different?"
(3) Phineas Nigellus: "They are camping in the Forest of Dean! The Mudblood —"
Snape: "Do not use that word!"
- That, boys and girls, is what we call a "character arc."

Notes:
(1) "A lone clog, the size of a small boat, lay abandoned in front of them. There was no other sign of Grawp or of his attacker."
- Huh, didn't know Grawp was Dutch, wooden shoes and all.
- Kidding. Hagrid found him east of Minsk so he's likely Russian.
(2) Snape: "You’re a witch."
Lily: "That’s not a very nice thing to say to somebody!"
- I mean, what do you expect?

Notes:
(1) Goyle: "You was looking for a die-dum! What’s a die-dum?"
- I bet Goyle will die dumb.
(2) Ron: "If we die for them, I’ll kill you, Harry!"
- Can the dead be killed?
(3) Hermione: "Are you a wizard, or what?"
Ron: "Oh — right — yeah — Wingardium Leviosa!"
- Nice callback to the first book, where the roles were reversed. Also, to the first spell they ever learned.

Notes:
(1) "Running at Ron, [Hermione] flung [her arms] around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. Ron ... responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet."
- Huh, it's a lot more aggressive in the book.
(2) Harry: "D'you think you could just — just hold it in until we’ve got the diadem?"
Ron: "Yeah — right — sorry."
- I bet he's not really sorry.

Notes:
(1) '"Our headmaster is taking a short break," said Professor McGonagall, pointing at the Snape-shaped hole in the window.'
- So much sass.
(2) I find it hard to believe that Dumbledore never knew about the Room of Requirement.
(3) '"It was Ron, all Ron’s idea!” said Hermione breathlessly. "Wasn’t it absolutely brilliant?"'
- Ron being brilliant makes Hermione swoon.

Notes:
(1) Harry uses the Cruciatus Curse and McGonagall uses the Imperius Curse. Sure, rules get thrown out when it comes to war, but do the ends justify the means?
(2) In the film McGonagall duels Snape one-on-one until he flees. In the book, it's Flitwick that runs Snape off.
(3) 'Professor McGonagall dryly, "we teachers are rather good at magic, you know."'
- Ha! Sassy.

Sakshi wrote: "Omg I didn't know there were different kinds of memory charms"Yeah, me too. But I suppose there are at least three: adding memories, altering memories and erasing memories. Though, when Slughorn altered his memory, the real memory was still there beneath it all. So I guess that one isn't permanent at least.
Arwen wrote: ""So he's either an opportunist or formed a habit" 😂😂 your HP updates are the best!!!"Thanks, Arwen! I'm happy you're enjoying them :)
Hmmm, maybe that just happened in the movies? Or did it happen in the books to? Anyway, you may be right and it may be just different.
Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Hmmm, maybe that just happened in the movies? Or did it happen in the books to? Anyway, you may be right and it may be just different."The scenes happens in both the book and the movie. The lines about never having done memory charms are only in the book. In the movie, Hermione just does it.

I would call it an inconsistency if it didn't happen so soon after she did the first thing so, yeah, most logical answer would be that they are different somehow.
Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "I would call it an inconsistency if it didn't happen so soon after she did the first thing so, yeah, most logical answer would be that they are different somehow."What Hermione did to her parents is probably the same thing Slughorn did to himself, or what Voldemort did to Morfin, adding a layer of false memories that could be undone at a later date. Erasing memories is likely the same as what happened to Lockhart, where memories are wiped and unrecoverable.

I've never thought about it like that... I like it XD
Audrey wrote: "That's always bothered me -- she DID do a memory charm already."It would have made perfect sense if the line had been changed to "I've never done that Memory Charm." It would indicate that there are more than one memory charm, and that it wasn't the one she did earlier in the book.
There's no indication (in all the previous books) that there are different kinds. Even Lockhart used the same charm to modify memories and to erase his own.
Audrey wrote: "There's no indication (in all the previous books) that there are different kinds. Even Lockhart used the same charm to modify memories and to erase his own."While we know that Obliviate is used to erase memories, the exact spell that Slughorn, Hermione, Lockhart and Voldemort used to modify memories is never mentioned in the books.
Rowling addressed this in this Q&A (the questions come after the answers in the transcript):
Question: "Did hermione really put a memory charm on her parents she says she did but then about 50 pages later tells ron shes never done a memory charm."
Rowling: "They are two different charms. She has not wiped her parents’ memories (as she later does to Dolohov and Rowle); she has bewitched them to make them believe that they are different people."
TMR wrote: "There might be a difference between the false ones and wiped memories.."Yes, indeed there is! You can read Rowling's explanation in my last comment :)
