Notes:
(1) I don't want to attribute symbolism where there might be none, but wizards really do react to their wands being broken like they've been gelded.
(2) "The idea of a teenage Dumbledore was simply odd, like trying to imagine a stupid Hermione or a friendly Blast-Ended Skrewt."
- Hermione has been plenty stupid before. It's just that hers has to do with common sense.

(1) My audiobook re-read of "Harry Potter" is nearly at an end. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the great discussion and enthusiasm. It was like having one big buddy-read with hundreds, even thousands, of people. I know many of you friended and followed me because of my "Harry Potter" updates, and I hope you decide to stick around for what comes next :)

Notes:
(1) Voldemort: "Pick up your little friend, Hagrid. And the glasses — put on the glasses — he must be recognizable —"
- Of course, the glasses... otherwise he'd be totally unrecognizable... a regular Clark Kent.
(2) Molly: "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH! ... OUT OF MY WAY! ... Get back! Get back! She is mine!"
- Well, at least we know where Ron gets his foul mouth from.

Notes:
(1) '"Explain," said Harry.
"But you already know," said Dumbledore. He twiddled his thumbs.'
- Always the teacher, Dumbledore. Makes you sound it out.
(2) Dumbledore: "Your wand imbibed some of the power and qualities of Voldemort’s wand ... and it regurgitated some of his own magic against him."
- Yuck! Voldemort magic apparently doesn't sit well in a wand's belly.

Notes:
(1) "He felt his heart pounding fiercely in his chest. How strange that in his dread of death, it pumped all the harder, valiantly keeping him alive."
- I don't find it strange at all. Harry's dreading death, after all.
(2) "He saw the mouth move and a flash of green light, and everything was gone."
- Huh, I thought Voldemort was more proficient in non-verbal spells.

Notes:
(1) "[Harry] heard Snape shout at [Lily] in his humiliation and his fury, the unforgivable word: "Mudblood."
(2) Lily: "You call everyone of my birth Mudblood, Severus. Why should I be any different?"
(3) Phineas Nigellus: "They are camping in the Forest of Dean! The Mudblood —"
Snape: "Do not use that word!"
- That, boys and girls, is what we call a "character arc."

Notes:
(1) "A lone clog, the size of a small boat, lay abandoned in front of them. There was no other sign of Grawp or of his attacker."
- Huh, didn't know Grawp was Dutch, wooden shoes and all.
- Kidding. Hagrid found him east of Minsk so he's likely Russian.
(2) Snape: "You’re a witch."
Lily: "That’s not a very nice thing to say to somebody!"
- I mean, what do you expect?

Notes:
(1) Goyle: "You was looking for a die-dum! What’s a die-dum?"
- I bet Goyle will die dumb.
(2) Ron: "If we die for them, I’ll kill you, Harry!"
- Can the dead be killed?
(3) Hermione: "Are you a wizard, or what?"
Ron: "Oh — right — yeah — Wingardium Leviosa!"
- Nice callback to the first book, where the roles were reversed. Also, to the first spell they ever learned.

Notes:
(1) "Running at Ron, [Hermione] flung [her arms] around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. Ron ... responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet."
- Huh, it's a lot more aggressive in the book.
(2) Harry: "D'you think you could just — just hold it in until we’ve got the diadem?"
Ron: "Yeah — right — sorry."
- I bet he's not really sorry.

Notes:
(1) '"Our headmaster is taking a short break," said Professor McGonagall, pointing at the Snape-shaped hole in the window.'
- So much sass.
(2) I find it hard to believe that Dumbledore never knew about the Room of Requirement.
(3) '"It was Ron, all Ron’s idea!” said Hermione breathlessly. "Wasn’t it absolutely brilliant?"'
- Ron being brilliant makes Hermione swoon.

Notes:
(1) Harry uses the Cruciatus Curse and McGonagall uses the Imperius Curse. Sure, rules get thrown out when it comes to war, but do the ends justify the means?
(2) In the film McGonagall duels Snape one-on-one until he flees. In the book, it's Flitwick that runs Snape off.
(3) 'Professor McGonagall dryly, "we teachers are rather good at magic, you know."'
- Ha! Sassy.

Ricky, please stop posting this link in my comments. This is the third time, and I'm getting very close to thinking you're some sort of spam bot. Don't make me think you're some sort of spam bot.

Alexandra Elend Wolf Indeed. SHe's smart but too prideful at times to. There are ways to be stupid that don't include having a low IQ.

Jenny Clark Sorry Jay, but I think you do have a spam bot... Every review of his has the same link. Plus side- you have a bot buddy now LOL!
I never really gave the wand thing much thought, but you do have a point... However, I think its closer to like in His Dark Materials where touching someone elses daemon is not to be taken lightly... the wizards or witchs wand is thier most personal possession, and to even touch anothers with anything other than respect is shocking, if that makes sense.

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Indeed. SHe's smart but too prideful at times to. There are ways to be stupid that don't include having a low IQ."

My thoughts exactly! It's way I've always thought Ron was a great complement to Hermione, because he brought the wizarding common sense and she brought the book smarts.

I figured that was the case. I always like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, though. Even when I get friend requests from users with no books and no profile info, I'm always patient and wait for them to prove to me that they're human :)

I see what you mean about wands. I think that personal bond must develop over time and use, because neither Ron nor Neville really had the same reaction when their wands broke. Seemingly younger people are more cavalier about using someone else's wand. There's a much stronger reaction in older wizards.

Jenny Clark That brings up an interesting question Jay. What is done with the broken wands???

Jayson Jenny wrote: "That brings up an interesting question Jay. What is done with the broken wands???"

I'd like to think they'd salvage the core and reuse it in a new wand, since it's only the wood that's broken. Alternatively, there are repairing charms, but it seems wands can't be repaired by magical means.

message 10: by Jenny (new) - added it

Jenny Clark Re using the core does make sense. As for the wood though

message 11: by Jenny (new) - added it

Jenny Clark I think I remember reading that magic was stored in that as well as the core. Maybe there is a way to "disarm" the rest of the wand?

Jayson Jenny wrote: "Re using the core does make sense. As for the wood though"

I figure wood's like a cracked mug. You can try to glue it together, but it's never going to hold water again.

Jayson Jenny wrote: "I think I remember reading that magic was stored in that as well as the core. Maybe there is a way to "disarm" the rest of the wand?"

Possibly. There really needs to be a handbook on wands and other magical items.

Jenny Clark Yes, that would be a great addition to the Hogwarts libary!

Cody Lol trying to imagine a 'stupid Hermione' thats a good one.

Jayson Jenny wrote: "Yes, that would be a great addition to the Hogwarts libary!"

I'd buy that in a heartbeat :)

Jayson Cody wrote: "Lol trying to imagine a 'stupid Hermione' thats a good one."

It's not as difficult as it looks. Just depends on how you define "stupid" :)

And Ron is great at strategy, as proven by his prowes at chess, which is also another kind of brilliance.

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "And Ron is great at strategy, as proven by his prowes at chess, which is also another kind of brilliance."

Yes, absolutely. That's something I think the movies were particularly negligent in conveying.

They treated him like a fool and buffon because, Lord forbid, that there wasn't one in the friend group *rolls eyes*

Agreed. Hollywood's not really known for their nuance and subtlety in big budget films. As a result, Ron was pigeonholed.

Pigeonholed *snorts* that's a nice way to put it XD

As we have agreed, there are many little details that could have gone so much better in the movies but alas, they didn't. At least we have our imaginations to make it all better *lol*

Exactly. We have our imaginations, and the hope for a better, more faithful adaptation in the future.
