I don't even have a problem with fluff fantasy. I can actually ADORE it, being in the right mood. But the thing with the series was that it was trying to NOT be fluff fantasy and be so unique or something, and that irritated me.

but like a mildly enjoyable one?
and what is also annoying is that it flip-flops weirdly between "deep, angst, dark" to "snarky, light, teasing banter" and its just not balanced well
Exactly EXACTLY. You just said it perfectly. It doesn't know if it wants to be dark and deep or light and funny. It's enjoyable but has so much lost potential.
