(1) "Poisonous toadstools don’t change their spots," said Ron sagely.
- It's a much sharper metaphor than leopards.
- Ron's all about wizarding common sense.
(2) Umbridge sings her responses to student queries. Though, Mary Poppins she's not.
(3) '"Have a biscuit, Potter."
"Have — what?"
"Have a biscuit!" [McGonagall] repeated impatiently.'
- Take a biscuit, Harry!

I love it too! It's sort of like Lupin telling Harry to each chocolate, but a lot funnier, and just so British.

Sophrosyne That scene was just pure gold.🤩

Yeah, it's one of those moments as a reader where your exasperation over a character's incomprehension boils over, and you audibly implore them to take the obvious path. In this case, I couldn't help but say, "Take a biscuit, Harry!" It's sort of like screaming at the TV the answer to an obvious Jeopardy question.

Juho Pohjalainen I tend to prefer books over the movies, as a general thing, but that Dark Arts Defence book is perfect. I wonder what the first-years are doing?

Jayson Juho wrote: "I tend to prefer books over the movies, as a general thing, but that Dark Arts Defence book is perfect. I wonder what the first-years are doing?"

At this point? Possibly learning vocabulary, I'm guessing, if the goal of fifth year students is to read from a book.

Imagine Umbridge trying to teach 11yo's their letters and words xD

Jayson Maja Ingrid wrote: "Imagine Umbridge trying to teach 11yo's their letters and words xD"

If the fifth year class is any indication, possibly learn them without speaking or writing. Possibly it's a very nap-focused curriculum. I doubt anyone's allowed to learn anything in any of Umbridge's classes.

Oh no. There's no napping in Umbridge's classroom. Every student who's caught napping gets to write the lines "I must not nap" with that blood cursed quill. They likely ge to read the letters or words out loud, but only at her say so. Writing is what they learn at year 7, or not at all (can't have the students write conspiracies behind her back, can we)

Yes, that seems much more likely. It's very listen and repeat, like Nineteen Eighty-Four. Of course, writing, as an expression of your own thoughts, would simply not be allowed :)

The ministry is scared that, if the students are able to have and express their own thoughts (in words) it's gonna hurt them and they can't have that. Soon writing will be prohibited all over Hogwarts but the other teachers, like McGonagall, are creative and find alternative ways for writing and to defy Umbridge.

Yes, reminds me of that quote from Nineteen Eighty-Four:
"Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten."
Possibly the Room of Requirement could be used for clandestine writing lessons. Though, that may not draw as many students as Harry's Defense Against the Dark Arts courses. But I can totally picture the Room of Requirement filled with chalkboards, pens and papers, with students writing whatever they want.

I really need to read 1984 at some point. Haven't gotten to it yet. Even my oldest brother has read and praised it and none of my older brothers reads anymore.

Hermione would totally lead the writing lessons. And people come there to write maybe silly poems for the sake of writing (which Luna totally would do) or writing for classes or letters that they sadly can't send home. Because since writing is prohibited owls are no longer needed and Umbridge already regulates what comes in by owlpost.

Jayson Maja Ingrid wrote: "I really need to read 1984 at some point. Haven't gotten to it yet. Even my oldest brother has read and praised it and none of my older brothers reads anymore."

I would definitely recommend it. I think it might be my favorite book. There is one really boring chapter near the end, but other than that I have a hard time putting it down.

Maja Ingrid wrote: "Hermione would totally lead the writing lessons. And people come there to write maybe silly poems for the sake of writing (which Luna totally would do) or writing for classes or letters that they sadly can't send home."

I think Hermione might have some difficulty letting people write whatever they want. Justification notwithstanding, she had a big problem with Rita Skeeter, and also with The Quibbler. On top of that she sort of has no patience for Luna's opinions and anecdotes. Though, in terms of pure writing theory, Hermione would be ideal.

Maja Ingrid wrote: "Because since writing is prohibited owls are no longer needed and Umbridge already regulates what comes in by owlpost"

Possibly they can pass messages though the Floo Network. I remember Molly being able to pass Amos Diggory some breakfast through the fireplace. I'm sure the Room of Requirement would be able to provide many a smokestack.

Yeah, she's definitely mostly good for the theoretical and classes parts of writing. She's about success and people getting it right for classes - just look how much she does for Ron and Harry on their assignments.
But she's not really needed when it comes to writing whatever you want. Lol her biggest issue with Skeeter though is her twist the facts. But she has zero issues hiring Skeeter to get to Umbridge.

Is it possible to use the floo powder unregulated at Hogwarts? (at "normal, before Umbridge" times) I know you can use floo powder to get to Hogwarts bc they used it I think it was in this book(?) to get back after christmas break but I always thought it was done under regulated circumstances. And even if they could, Umbridge's keeping close eye on all the fireplaces anyway. She'd know if someone used the floo network and which fireplace was used.

Jayson Maja Ingrid wrote: "Yeah, she's definitely mostly good for the theoretical and classes parts of writing. She's about success and people getting it right for classes - just look how much she does for Ron and Harry on their assignments."

Yes, that's true... occasionally she will literally do the assignments for Harry and Ron, often she just lets them outright copy her homework.

Maja Ingrid wrote: "But she's not really needed when it comes to writing whatever you want. Lol her biggest issue with Skeeter though is her twist the facts. But she has zero issues hiring Skeeter to get to Umbridge."

I think Hermione really has an issue with people disagreeing with her, whether genuine or not. That's often the crux of her arguments with Ron. Whereas Harry's more than happy to accede to her points simply to avoid conflict. Often, as with SPEW or homework schedules, she'll keep hammering a point home until people give in or get tired arguing.

Maja Ingrid wrote: "Is it possible to use the floo powder unregulated at Hogwarts? (at "normal, before Umbridge" times)"

I think Sirius used the fireplace to talk with Harry a few times. I believe that had to do with the Floo Network because he had to break into a muggle's house to use their fireplace. Even if it were only akin to a telephone, it would still be a useful replacement for owls in terms of communication with the outside world.

Maja Ingrid wrote: "And even if they could, Umbridge's keeping close eye on all the fireplaces anyway. She'd know if someone used the floo network and which fireplace was used."

I'd assume that any fireplaces in the Room of Requirement would be off the books, and unable to be monitored. I mean, it doesn't even show up on the Marauder's Map, and might not physically be at Hogwarts. Could be some sort of pocket dimension.

omg I totally forgot Sirius using them xD Might still have been enough monitored so that the students couldn't just up and go whenever they wanted. And yeah, floo powdering from Room of Requirement would likely not work, as you say, since it doesn't exist on a "fixed point" so to say.

Jayson Maja Ingrid wrote: "omg I totally forgot Sirius using them xD Might still have been enough monitored so that the students couldn't just up and go whenever they wanted. And yeah, floo powdering from Room of Requirement..."

The Room of Requirement might still work for the Floo Network. The only rule about traveling to Hogwarts is that you can't apparate or disapparate on school grounds. The Room of Requirement must then still be on "school grounds" because Malfoy couldn't just have Death Eaters apparate there, he needed the Vanishing Cabinet to sneak them into Hogwarts. The Vanishing Cabinet is very much like the Floo Network, in the sense that a two-way radio is very much like a telephone.

My favorite so far might be the Christmas lunch where low-key burns Trelawney by offering her tripe, which was also a comment on her predictions. But then, she really doesn't hate Trelawney, as seen when she defends her against Umbridge.

Might be easier to use floo network to get out of room of requirement. With the cabinet it's different bc they are connected. Chimneys aren't. You need to tell the floo where you going and that neeeds to be a real, existing place. It seems very sensitive bc it took Harry to the wrong place for mispronouncing/stammering out Diagon Alley. What if someone would say "Room of Requirement, Hogwarts". Since the room doesn't really exist on a fixed point and doensnt even have a chimney everytime or it might have an uncountable amounts that may or may not exist. Floo network just gonna go "fuck that i'm just gonna drop you in Umbridge's office byee~ 😀"
And they can't use the other chimneys bc Umbridge are watching them.

Jayson Maja Ingrid wrote: "Jayson wrote: "Maja Ingrid wrote: "omg I totally forgot Sirius using them xD Might still have been enough monitored so that the students couldn't just up and go whenever they wanted. And yeah, floo..."

Very good point. Though, makes you wonder whether the Room of Requirement is actually connected to Hogwarts while it's occupied and in use. Dumbledore once used it for a toilet, in which case, where did all the waste go if it's not connected to Hogwarts pipes? I'd expect the Room wouldn't carry it along indefinitely... though, as a storage room, it does seem to carry everything with it. 🤔

It might have an actual place somewhere else and pops up whenever anyone needs it. Or it's something the founders added for one or other reason. Or it's a biproduct of magic. It likely just take care of everything magically. One of its charms is no one knows the hows and whys and while it would be fun to learn everything, I kinda like knowing next to nothing.
