(1) If you’re a wizard, don’t give your kids the initials AF, they’ll likely be a squib: Arabella Figg, Argus Filch.
- Mrs. Figg's cat keeps tabs on Harry. Wonder if it's magic?
(2) Petunia: “I heard — that awful boy — telling her about [dementors] — years ago.”
Harry: “If you mean my mum and dad, why don’t you use their names?”
- She means Snape.

(1) Well, I'm nearly finished with this. Now I've got to hunker down and write my review. I simultaneously hate writing reviews but love finishing reviews. It's like exercise, and Harry Potter reviews are especially stressful and demanding on account of the extra attention.

Notes:
(1) "Cornelius, I am ready to fight your men — and win again!"
- Dumbledore giving orders to Fudge while still an enemy of the state is one of the series most boss moments.
(2) Phineas Nigellus: "You see, Dumbledore? ... Never try to understand the students. They hate it. They would much rather be tragically misunderstood..."
- A bit cynical, but he's not incorrect.

(1) Neville: "A brain attacked Ron but I think he’s all right — and Hermione’s unconscious, but we could feel a pulse —"
- You'd think all the time fighting with Hermione would have better prepared Ron to fight another brain.
(2) Voldemort calls Bellatrix "Bella"... wonder if he's a "Twilight" fan?
(3) It's easy to forget that people still think Sirius is a murderer.

(1) "[Harry] just wanted to get them all out of this alive, make sure that none of his friends paid a terrible price for his stupidity."
- That's certainly a good reason.
(2) Harry: "How come Voldemort wants it?"
Bellatrix: "You dare speak his name?"
Harry: "Yeah."
- Good answer, Harry. Very forthright.
(3) Ron: "Accio brain!"
- C'mon, Ron, you've already got brains.

(1) Hermione treats Luna like McGonagall treats Trelawney. With open disdain at the mere mention of absurdities, but with affection and friendship when faced against a common enemy.
(2) Harry, Luna and Neville being the only ones who can hear voices behind the veiled archway should have been a light bulb moment, since they're also the only ones who can see thestrals.

Notes:
(1) Ron: "What’ve you done with Umbridge?"
Harry: "She got carried away."
- Very James Bond of him.
- Even in life-threatening situations there's always time for jokes.
(2) Harry: "Ron’s the only one with a broomstick that isn’t being guarded by
a security troll, so —"
Ginny: "I’ve got a broom!"
- Ginny being invisible to Harry again. He'll change his tune next book.

(1) '"What did you call us?" shouted a wild-looking black centaur, whom Harry recognized as Bane.'
- Bane? I bet he was born in the darkness.
- In my head he's voiced by Tom Hardy.
(2) "Real tears [slid] down [Hermione's] face now. “We haven’t done anything to hurt you ... we just want to go back to school.”
- Of course she wants to go back to school, she's Hermione.

(1) Hermione loves elves but hates giants... a bit hypocritical if you ask me. Also ironic since nearly every elf hates her, but Grawp adores her.
(2) 'Harry raised his wand, looked directly at Umbridge, and imagined her being sacked.
"Expecto Patronum!"'
- Sure, that's a happy thought... though, if it were me, I'd add some sort of humiliation to make it extra happy.

Annie (1)- I never realized that wow

(2)- yes it took a reread or two for me to understand whom she was talking about

So far as I know, they're the only two squibs we know from the books. Granted, I've not read either of the Fantastic Beasts books, but if I had to put money on it, I think there's a pretty good chance that if there was another squib, they'd have the initials AF too :)

I love that so much care was taken to plant seeds in books, especially ones that are only noticed and understood on subsequent readings.

I always encourage rereads with this series. You're always picking up new things you didn't notice along the way :)

I'm a little OCD and like to read each book the same number of times, so I read the last two again but not this one since finishing the series.

When I re-read the first one after having gone through 3 or 4 I was floored by all the setup with Sirius.

Jayson Audrey wrote: "I'm a little OCD and like to read each book the same number of times, so I read the last two again but not this one since finishing the series."

Yeah, I'm like that too. Though, I did a full reread each before the sixth and seventh books came out, so my numbers, so my overall numbers are uneven. I've probably read the fourth book the most since I started there after watching the first three films.

Yeah, it never ceases to amaze me when that happens, even though I know it's there.

Alexandra Elend Wolf She does means Snape! The foreshadowing was right there! If only Petunia had told Harry about his mother he wouldn't have been so surprised when Snape finally tells him... though, it wouldn't have been the right time to do so then. Harry would not understood.

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "She does means Snape! The foreshadowing was right there! If only Petunia had told Harry about his mother he wouldn't have been so surprised when Snape finally tells him... though, it wouldn't have ..."

Yeah, I agree. The right time for Harry was via the Pensieve, to see everything in proper context. If Petunia told him about Snape at any time in the past, I'm sure it would mean a lot of confusion and questions that no one would be willing or able to answer. It would warrant an investigation in an of itself. Though, it's questionable whether Petunia even remembers Snape's name, in which case telling Harry wouldn't mean much at all aside from saying that Lilly had a wizard friend when she was young.

Alexandra Elend Wolf Jayson wrote: "Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "She does means Snape! The foreshadowing was right there! If only Petunia had told Harry about his mother he wouldn't have been so surprised when Snape finally tells him..."

Yep, it would have derailed things way too much.

I don't know, but I think she would remember his name. Petunia wasn't that young when Lily knew Snape and it must have been an important period for Petunia. After all, she wanted to go to Hogwarts so I imagine she paid some degree of especial attention to Snape. It's also a sequence of situations that marked her life and even if she pretends to not remember James' name -out of pettiness - I don't think she ever forgot any of that.

Probably you're right. She definitely knows much more than she lets on. She knows about the dementors, for example. She also seem to have some formal agreement with Dumbledore, judging by the howler he sent her.

Exactly. It's something that she was very invested in and wanted. Which makes it sadder because she could have told Harry so much about his world and his parents but didn't.

A lot of times, when people fail to achieve their dreams, they'll block out that part of their life entirely, so they don't have to think about it anymore. Possibly that's why she married Vernon, to live the most un-magical life ever.

Yeah, I think so too. And the fact that je was so repulsed/scared by the whole concept was just a plus *lol*

Vernon definitely encourages and enables her anti-magic stance. lol.

Her sister being killed because of magic probably soured her on it too, or the idea that it may have been her as well if she lived in the wizarding world.

Hmm, I wouldn't know about her feelings about Lily's death. They were certainly not in pleasant terms. But, mostly, that was owed to Petunia being jealous. So, yeah, maybe her death did make her reflect that it could have been her.

But it could also have been just, like, thinking she deserved it and letting the pettiness and jealousy take the best of her - which I'll assume happened at some level based on how she treated Harry .

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "But it could also have been just, like, thinking she deserved it and letting the pettiness and jealousy take the best of her - which I'll assume happened at some level based on how she treated Harry ."

I think that's very plausible. She could think of Harry as her sister's last revenge where Lilly left her a permanent reminder and an extra mouth to feed. In which case, her anger at Lilly would transfer to Harry.

Alternatively, it could be that Harry represents a link to the magical past she wants nothing to do with, and that by mistreating him she's exercising control over it, where she was helpless before – helpless in being denied going to Hogwarts and helpless to stop Lilly's death. Though, I could be thinking too deep into it :)

Yeah, it definitely could have been either of those... or maybe she just really didn't like Harry -I know, not really funny but I couldn't resist it XD

That's the fun of it! Overthinking it :D

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Yeah, it definitely could have been either of those... or maybe she just really didn't like Harry -I know, not really funny but I couldn't resist it XD"

Yeah, there are many reasons why she might hate Harry. Having to coddle and spoil Dudley so he doesn't get jealous, for example :)
