Notes:
(1) At this point, I don't care about the series at all beyond finishing it.
(2) El Diablo's back for this volume. Probably because the movie was coming out at the time and they wanted as close a match to the movie team as possible.
(3) I'll watch the movie after I'm done this. I wonder what influence the books had, if any, and vice versa.

Suicide Squad

Film Review:
(B) 73% | More than Satisfactory
Notes:
(1) Since the film was based on this New 52 version of the Suicide Squad, and this book in particular led into the film, I thought it might be a nice idea to watch and review the film. If people like this sort of thing, I might do more of it.

Notes:
(1) As much as I enjoy Juan Ferreyra's art, page layouts aren't his strong-suit.
(2) Apparently Deadshot and Captain Boomerang are hated rivals. When did that happen? I never got that sense from any of the previous books. Suddenly they're all Potter and Malfoy with each other.
(3) Seeley's take on Harley seems really self-aware and quirky.

Notes:
(1) Nearly every "Suicide Squad" plot is the same: something goes wrong on a mission and they have to fight their way out against overwhelming odds. This book acknowledges that and puts a bit of a "Hunger Games" twist on it. I'm digging it.
(2) Happy Harley is best Harley. Depressed Harley from the last book really weighed everything down.

Notes:
(1) Tim Seeley writing "Suicide Squad" may not be the best fit. He's trying too hard to be irreverent. So we get things like incontinence jokes.
(2) As a Canadian. I appreciate the Tim Horton's analogue.
(3) I've always enjoyed Juan Ferreyra's cover work. Reminds me of Joe Chiodo, with its very painted style. Jury's still out on interiors.

Sonja You haven't watched the Suicide Squad movie yet?

David - proud Gleeman in Branwen's adventuring party I wasn't a fan of the Suicide Squad movie, but the Birds of Prey movie was a lot of fun and Harley gets a lot more to do in that one. :D

I'm afraid I haven't. I was so bummed out by Batman vs Superman that I was put off of superhero movies for a while, which was when the movie was released.

That's good to know. I've found that, generally speaking, people who like the first film dislike the second and vice versa. It's interesting how they play to two totally different audiences.

Sonja Ah, that's totally understandable! B vs S was a huge let-down.. Suicide Squad wasn't a masterpiece or anything, but I did really enjoy it (definitely a lot more than B vs S 😂)

Sonja And funnily enough, I didn't like the Birds of Prey movie. It's equally as good/bad as B vs S in my opinion :')

That's good to know. I'm happy you liked it! It's encouraging news for me, going into a film with such mixed reviews :)

HA HA, furthering Jayson's observation that people who liked Suicide Squad didn't like Birds of Prey and vice versa! xD It really does seem to be either one or the other for fans! :o

That's not surprising. I mentioned earlier in this comment thread that people who like "Suicide Squad" hate "Birds of Prey" and vice versa. I've yet to come across someone who like both or disliked both. Makes me wonder what side of the fence I'll fall on :)

Lol! Yes, I think they were just made for two distinctly different audiences, and more than that, audiences with contrasting tastes. I've not seen either film yet, but just judging from the trailers and posters and such, they couldn't be more different 😁

Sonja The weird thing is that I went to the cinema thinking I was going to love Birds of Prey, I liked the trailer and the whole message of girl power and I love Harley Quinn, but unfortunately the movie just didn't click with me..

Yeah, funny how that all works. Seeing how you would be the target audience for it, you'd think it would be tailored specifically for your tastes and sensibilities.

That said, there are plenty of horror films that horror fans hate, and plenty of action films that action fans hate, and etc. Aesthetic, message and fandom only get you so far, and is all just window dressing if the film isn't well made or doesn't hit home.

I always compare it to food. I'll eat anything if it's cooked well or by someone who knows how I like things. Conversely, my favorite foods made badly don't go down so well.

Sonja Ahh, that's a really good analogy! And very true.

I hope that you enjoy both Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, I think both films have their good moments—but I guess we'll see which one hits home for you (and which one doesn't) 😅

Thanks! I think I'll finish off the "Birds of Prey" series before I watch that film, the same way I'm doing with "Suicide Squad," since the New 52 iteration is the one the movie seems to be based on. Like you said, we'll see which side of the fence I'll fall on 😁👍

The Birds of Prey movie has nothing to do with any of the comics other than sharing a name and the characters. It felt like the movie was written and directed by someone who never read any of the comics. Harley's the only character that is the same.

Yeah, I figured that would be the case. I just compared it to the New 52 version because it's obviously not based on the Dixon or Simone runs where it was exclusively Oracle, Huntress and Black Canary.

The movie seems to be taking a Suicide Squad approach to it where team membership is fluid. Not that they'd ever do a sequel, but if they did make another one, I'd expect the lineup to change.

I think the original name for the film, back when it was in development, was "Gotham City Sirens," which I'd much prefer despite that also being a three-woman team. At least Harley was a part of that group.
