The people in La Paz were made to believe that God gave then a place/station, and they shouldn’t leave or there would be consequences. The priest told tales and myths to make them follow​ because he wanted to stay at the top of the social pyramid and he didn’t like the thought that the natives who are on the bottom can suddenly become higher than him.

In this novella, Juana and the pearl are both very beautiful for Kino. But one shines light into his life; while the other one guides him over to the dark and evil side.

One theme I noticed is that sometimes in life, only the strong and powerful will strive. The doctor and the priest' kind treated Kino’s kind as children and animals because they were stronger. Kino's people couldn't do anything about it because they are in poverty. Therefore because the doctor and the priest have more power, they are at the top of the social pyramid.
