The archetype in this book is desert and emptiness. Watney is stranded on a desert like planet or mars. Watney has no one to talk to and no one to help him. He has to go through many different trails and errors to try to contact people and save himself. Watney is stuck on this desert like planet with little to no hope of survival. Watney is physically on a desert planet all alone.

The Martian is a book about a stranded astronaut who is trying to get off mars and get home. Watney isn’t stranded after getting hit by a communication disk which damaged his vital monitors. This lead the crew to think he wasn’t dead and so they had to leave him due to a sandstorm. The mood of this book is tragic fearful because Watney is left alone with no communication and only 30 days of food.
