Fang and Nudge hide in a cave at Lake Mead while they study the flight patterns of nearby hawks; back at the House, the remaining members of the Flock are upset that they were left behind. They begin making traps and bombs. It is a good thing, too, because the Erasers arrive the next morning and fall into one of the traps. Iggy and Gazzy escape, but blow up the House in the process.

Max looks at the island while she is sitting with Angel. Half of it is underwater and the other half is covered in high cliffs. She says that she and the others were made for this. They were made to survive in the new world after the apocalypse. Fang comes back and Max says she loves him. They hold hands and see the shadows of their figures together. She tells the reader, "This is my time. The time of Maximum Ride."

Angel, a Flock member who’s like a surrogate daughter to Max, and who was presumed killed in the previous novel, is actually alive. She is back at the School, the evil experimentation lab that created the bird-kids. Locked once more in a dog crate, Angel is subjected to a series of maiming operations that leave her nearly blind and with clipped wings.

Nudge is twelve years old She is the only one that cares so much about how she looks. As Max describes in the book, she has a twelve-step daily beauty regimen. Nudge is often called a "motor mouth" by The Flock because she will not ever stop talking.

He probably has the most random name out of them all, almost reminds people of an igloo. When he was in what The Flock calls The School, where they were primarily created and altered, as a small child the scientists there tried to alter his eyes. As they may have thought it would work, it ended up failing, in which Iggy ends up blind.

Fang and his gang discover the Doomsday Gang, a group of people who worship the One Light. The group is trying to eradicate the human race. They want all kids to be genetically modified and to lead a new world order. Whereas Max's flock was created in test tubes from a mix of human and avian DNA, Fang's new group has been genetically modified in a lab after birth

Fang;He came into The Flock's life in the book Fang. He is assumed to be Max's perfect other half, as the scientists who created him say, although he was only genetically created and has no real family. He is almost the complete opposite to Fang.

Fang: He is the most silent out of them all. He has always chosen to be drawn-back and can sneak away from people without them realizing it. He also has the ability to be practically invisible from a normal human's sight.

Maximum is the main character in this story and the whole series. She is usually the leader of The Flock, or all of the winged characters. Her personality is mysterious, only Angel can know what's on her mind
